backing up photos to google

OK, I must be doing something wrong when trying to backup pics on my android phone and tablet to Google+. I have correctly set photos to auto backup on both devices.

Firstly, should I look in Google Plus or in the app that simply says Photos with the colourful pinwheel as its icon?

Secondly, no matter which one I look in, the pictures are there but when I delete a picture on my phone, I also delete it on the backup which seems a bit pointless. How can I save pictures to Google's cloud storage and keep them there if they get deleted on the device? And what is the difference between Google+ and Photos?

I must be looking at Picassa somehow directly on the device, not on the cloud. I just deleted another picture using Gallery on the device to see what would happen and it immediately disappeared nwhen I went to look at my photos in Picassa. I doubt it even had a chance to change the backup in that time.

Is thee something I should be looking at to see the photos on picassa in the cloud?

Go to Google+ on the web and log in using the gmail account the phone is registered to. Then click on the apps icon (grid of squares) in the upper left corner next to your name. Scroll down to Photos and select that. You see recent photos by default, but you can click "Photos" to see them all. See if the deleted ones are there.

Ok, this is nuts. I am on my Nexus 10. I have photos in Gallery that I have imported from my Canon camera. I then have autosync selected to my gmail account. I go to Google plus or picasa (when I click on photos on Google+, it takes me to a Picassa type of page) and there are the pics. As soon as I delete one from my nexus, it also disappears from Google plus/picassa. I am signed in to Google, I am signed in to Google+. It makes no difference.

Also, I am trying to sync pictures from my Nexus 5 phone and I have the same problem. I am definitely signed in. I do not understand this at all but its driving me crazy. I must be looking at them off line but on the Picassa interface. Otherwise they could not resync that quickly and why would they delete anyway?

Okay ... let's look at some stuff. Open G+ on either device and go to photos and select the Camera tab. On my Nexus 4 it gives me the Auto Backup status there with a little cloud on each image that's been successfully backed up to the cloud.

You got that? If not tap on menu>settings>Auto Backup and make sure it's turned on and that it's pointed to the right account.

Ok, when I do that I can see the picture tiles on the device and another tile that takes me up to folders for Bluetooth, whatsapp pics, etc. They all have a small square in th with a diagonal arrow in it where the cloud should be.

I have Auto Backup ticked and it points to the gmail account.

Same for both devices.

I have seen the cloud icon before though.

Ok, here's where we are at......

I have told both devices to back up again. This seems to be successful but I am still a little confused.

The cloud icon now appears on g+ for both devices. This is only for pictures taken on that device so the photos I imported to the N10 from my Canon camera show no icon.

But when I exit and reopen G+ the cloud icon is replaced by the square with diagonal arrow again. What does this mean? And why do the imported pictures not show up with the cloud icon? They are the ones that disappear from G+ as soon as I delete one from the device.

And the really confusing bit is that the Gallery app on each device has a folder called Auto Backup. In here are all the pics from ages ago that I assume have backed up automatically. This is great except it means that I have to the device in my hand to access the pics?

OK,I have tried to backup again on each device. The phone is taking a while but is uploading.

The N5 is backing up camera shots taken on the tablet (they show the cloud icon) but if I go up a level, the pictures imported to the tablet are not showing either icon.

Also, going to the Gallery app on either device shows an Auto Backup folder which is pretty well identical on both devices, so something is happening here. But no cloud icons on Google +, and no apparent backups of imported photos. So basically as it stands now, if my phone and tablet went missing I would not have a cloud backup that I can access. Can't be right.

That's what I thought but I did get the cloud icon and also each device informed me on the drop down that I had backed up to Google successfully.

I saw the cloud icon again later but attached us a screenshot of the icon I currently see. Any idea what it means?
