S5 fails to excite

The 805 is still only available to OEMs as a reference design, so the launch of any devices using the SOC are unlikely until it goes into production. No one wants to risk the embarrassment of any delay scuppering their flagship's release.

Now I'm reading that it's actually 801 with some speed bump in CPU/GPU from 800. That makes me feel better. Interestingly Wiki now states 805 will go into S5 as well. Probably some time later in the prime version?

Snapdragon 801 is much the same with clockspeeds increased so it won't offer much extra over Snapdragon 800, will look good in benchmarks no doubt but in real world performance it's about the same.

It's comparable to the difference between devices running Snapdragon 600 at 1.7Ghz/400MHz vs other Snapdragon 600 devices running at 1.9GHz/450MHz.

Snapdragon 801 also features eMMC 5.0 but that doesn't interest me in the slightest.

I have the S4, I am getting the S5. Better battery life, much improved camera, faster processor, improved screen, etc. I see many reasons to upgrade ...

Others devices available now already offer all the the above, some most of the above.

The Nexus 5 32GB is looking very tempting right now...

I have feeling that they are still working on prime version of S5 with all the hardware goodies and it's not ready to show yet. They probably sent to MWC what's done already and setting up Episode 2 for April or May.

If that is to be the case, I would certainly hope they let the general public in on this prior to the release of what was shown today. I would be ticked beyond belief if I purchased this phone unaware that a premium version was around the corner.

Right now I have about 16 GB left on my 32 GB LG G2 so its not shocking to me. The roms are getting bigger and the apps are getting larger. I could get rid of a few gigs by deleting a nandroid backup but by and large that's about typical for me anymore.

A 16 GB phone just isn't cutting it for me these days. It helps to have expandable memory but large roms and accompanying system data are taking a big ole bite out of the internal memory regardless.

I was pretty excited for a metal version, but I am in agreement with a few other posters that the plastic may be more durable. I have dropped my S4 several times, and short of a cracked screen, the plastic zll looks great! ( screen was replaced by insurance)

I will get the S5 because I like to have the latest device. I may not know all the technical aspects of the phone, but I do enjoy having the "hot new phone". I just hope someone jumps on a waterproof case right away....

If you check, the sources for that are are press reports of rumours a few weeks ago. Why should a rumour be more reliable because a journalist(*) uses it for cheap clickbait copy, or because someone edits it into Wikipedia?

Time will tell. Last year Samsung added more powerful S4 variants during the year, though only in some regions, so it's an easy guess to make. But whether the person this started with had any actual information I don't know.

(*) One of the sources was the Daily Mail, so I'm using the term very loosely.

S5: 142 x 72.5 x 8.1mm (5.1" screen)
G2: 138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9mm (5.2" screen)
S4: 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm (5" screen)

So 3.5mm taller, 1.6mm wider and a SMALLER SCREEN!
Water-resistance with a removable back is going to add some bulk.

Consider this instead:

S4: 136.6 x 69.8 x 7.9 mm (5" screen)
S4 Active: 139.7 x 71.3 x 9.1 mm (5" screen)
S5: 142 x 72.5 x 8.1mm (5.1" screen)

It's S4 Active -> S5 which is the better comparison, not S4 -> S5.

You are right. I didn't check into source of that. Now they seem to have dropped it from the table on 805. Still I think there will be prime version with better processor, display.

I don't actually think it's that bad!

It's using the latest Snapdragon processor, it doesn't come much better than that.

I know screen resolution was rumoured to be better, but I challenge anyone to notice any difference between 1080 & anything higher on a 5" screen.

RAM could have been higher, but I'm pretty sure 2GB will be fine.

Finally, say what you will about the design (dimples on the back), I think the blue variant looks absolutely gorgeous.

Agreed, and I'll go one further: the only way I could believe higher resolution would be if they went LCD rather than AMOLED, and although they do that on many models I couldn't see it on their main flagship for the year. That plus the obvious energy costs made me suspicious of that rumour all along.

When I read "lack of build quality" it reminds me of those who haven't looked closely to notice there's nothing wrong at all. It's a very well built phone. Based on my personal experience, my S3 and S4 are extremely durable.

Now if you don't like the choice of materials, that's a valid reason to complain and buy something else.

This entire obsession over a metal phone only exists because of Apple and it's massive influence over people. I own both a metal iPhone 5S and a plastic Galaxy S4, plus a Note 3. I greatly prefer my plastic Samsung's and my Nexus 5 over the iPhone any day.

Frankly I'm so busy enjoying my Androids, what they're made of is something I simply don't think of.

You have 4 cell phones? You must be a popular guy. ;) We all have our hobbies, I suppose cell phones is one of yours. Which do you use daily?

I could have rephrased it a bit better and directed my comment as more of an issue with my disappointment in the materials used. It's all personal preference. Just as you prefer plastic. With that said, it definitely has nothing to do with apples "influence" as you so put it.

This phone doesn't do much for me personally. Too similar to the last phone. Baby steps. I do like reading the glass half full comments about how it's all going to be different in the next version. Keep the faith!

Unless I missed something, by tech specs the screen is not improved. It's the same Super AMOLED, stretched by .1 inches and given the same resoution. Thus resulting in less PPI. 441 vs 432.

I know that is nitpicking, but isn't that what were doing here?

I know. All it does it make it a little easier to see.

Will the Note 4 have at least 2K or even 4K?

I'm interested in the improvements in the camera. The post shot focusing sounds intriguing, where every time you click the shutter two photos are taken, one focusing on the subject and one of the background, so afterwards you could merge the two photos and have the background in focus as well. One of the issues with smartphone cameras is that they don't have variable apertures, so maybe this feature goes some way in getting around this?

I was heavily considering leaving my droid maxx and going onto the Verizon edge program to get the S5 but that phone is very disappointing to me! Don't get me wrong.... Im sure it will run circles around my maxx but it's just ugly and I was really hoping for an immensely toned down touch wiz. For now I'm keeping my maxx and unlimited data. Hell, I may pick up a note 3 in September (next upgrade) which will still very much relavent IMHO.

Prior to last night we heard the wildest rumors: the S5 would get a fingerprint scanner on the screen, have a qHD screen with a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels and have an iris scanner. Eventually it turned out to be nothing more than hopes, because these things weren't mentioned at the presentation. Are we disappointed in our hopes now, or in well deserved expectations?

The S5 has new features. The fingerprint scanner on the screen did not become reality but there is one in the home button. In addition, the Galaxy S5 has a heart rate sensor, new, more powerful hardware, a camera with fast autofocus, a waterproof case and quite a revamped version of TouchWiz (hate it or love it, but it's there).
There are enough new features present, such as the 801-soc, support wifi ac mimo, the ISOCELL sensor with phase detection and a USB 3.0 connection to the S5 to justify it being called a true high-end smartphone.

I like what I see, although I am not convinced (now) that I will trade my S3 for it. The S is evolving, but not revolutionary enough for me.
