Well it appears that today is the day of reckoning. AT&T is supposed to release KK for the i337 today.

KitKat for AT&T's Galaxy S4 available today | Android Central

I need to know more about this SD card issue before I choose to download KK.
May your God be with you...

A colleague at work has a Note 3, and he's new to the Android platform. I was warning him away from upgrading to 4.4.2 and explained some of the problems we've been talking about.
So he asked how updates arrive, and I explained OTA, and also suggested that, if he did wish to elect to upgrade in the future, he always had the option of downloading it himself.

I then showed him how to access the software update from the settings after the update was released, whereupon he scrolled to the update screen, and the upgrade began automatically downloading. We tried desperately to abort the upgrade, even removing the battery, but once it rebooted it went into install mode. I didn't realize that downloading and installing the upgrade isn't really an option, it's a statement.

The guilt!! After all my warnings and tales of woe about the ext SD card, I threw his phone to the wolves. Luckily he hadn't installed any apps, and only uses the ext SD for media storage. He's probably over on the Note 3 forum now, complaining about the blockhead at work who screwed up his phablet.

I am happy with the S4 with 4.3, Nova and root. Battery life for both sleep mode and usage is very good and Foxfi devs warned that wifi mode of their app will stop working with Kitty Kat.

BTW, I froze the Samsung tasks that initiate/force updates with Titanium. Stock 4.3 rom with Nova and root will be what I use until the device dies, or something more "wowing" comes along than the S5.

IMO, the S4 is an "A" the way I have it already.

If the info from that link is accurate, then my SD card use will be unaffected. I just keep data files on my SD card, no apps. I also use ES FileExplorer to manage my files and copy to/from my PC over my WLAN.

So did I read it wrong for my unrooted 32Gb GS4 with a 64Gb SD card?

According to this article we won't be able to move files to/from SDcard wirelessly _http://beranger.org/2014/01/30/how-kitkat-4-4-killed-android-and-google-keeps-screwing-things/

I would like to hear from someone who has made the transition to KK and see if their experience bears out the warnings from the blog linked above:

"you can no longer use a file manager to copy files from your computer to the SD card over a network. This ability, which has existed since the beginning of Android, has been taken away."

I value the ability to move files across my WLAN. If I can do the same thing by USB, I guess that's a workaround I can live with, but it's not ideal by any stretch.

Linky here: (it is not work or family friendly due to language)

Googles march from an open customizable os to one like ios has me concerned. They are making choices that we should be making. I don't want to use cloud storage for everything. That should be my choice, not theirs. If I want to have alleged security holes, it should be my choice. I was considering 4 android tablets for my family and was on the verge of buying them. Not any more. I'm looking at windows ones instead. Will wait and see how this plays out but I suspect my days of high end android smartphones and tablets are over and will use a cell phone just as a phone.

Thanks Allanlaw.. I know its not out for Verizon yet, but I wanted to make sure that when it comes out I dont accidently download it, which is why I was asking how to turn off the auto downlaod beforte its too late. I dont have the option described in the post by, anoniemouse.
My experience has been that when an OTA update downloads to the phone, it lets you know and asks you to install it. You can keep ignoring the request but after a while, I predict it will get on your nerves and you will let it do its thing.

Hmm, I was able to move random files around from various folders. Google/movies to EA sports using Astro. Then I was able to put a word document inside the Alarms folder. I'm running 4.4.2 on my Nexus 7. I thought KitKat wouldn't allow this?? Or is that only for external SD storage?

Apparently KK will allow you to move files around on internal storage not to and from SD card which sucks big time:(

So, does that mean the contents cant be moved from SD card to internal memory or vise versa. Example: When I take screen shots, they save to a screen shot folder, in internal storage. Can I move that screen shot from the screen shot folder to a folder on the SD card?

I also am rooted and use tb. What samsung apps did you freeze that prevents automatic updates?

From what I have read you won't be able to. I haven't had the KK update yet. Any chance you could try moving the file between folders and let us know how you get on? It would certainly be helpful to me and I guess many others.

Cheers
