ok so ... cleared all cache's, re-set again, signed back into google, downloaded the google play apk and installed, I am now downloading apps again so all is good with the world.. mebbe

I'm not sure why you're tablet wouldn't see it. Which tablet do you have? Does it see other hotspots?

Does factory reset delete sd card data too?if it does could I remove the micro sd before reset?I'm probaly gonna wait till my phones older before I root it but I just wonder about this.

Backup to a computer just incase but no.
This phone is better rooted with a larg sd card with a 2gb partition for apps.
