"Galaxy S3 should be getting the 4.4 update soon, so hold out for that. Unfortunately I've not found a way to disable the update notifications, but just keep ignoring them. answered 2 weeks, 4 days ago by

How do I know which version as right now my phone wants to update, says "continue?" But doesn't tell me what the update is.

This is the method I used and it was awesome. Took less than 10 minutes and 5 of those minutes were used for me to contemplate yes or no to root.

[Tutorial] Rooting the Sprint GalaxyS3 the Easy Way - xda-developers

You think S3 is awesome now????...wait until you root your phone. I still find things about my phone that still fascinates me.

FYI, I use TWRP for my recovery, CyanogenMod 11 running cm-11-20140217-NIGHTLY-d2spr.zip and it is by far the best. Everything works flawlessly, IMHO. I have not run into any issues with it yet. I also use KK Launcher Prime since I can manipulate every single thing on my phone

If you run into any snags whatsoever, there are tons of people to help on these forums or XDA forums. You will be nervous at first, but once you commit, you will be the most happy person out there. Good Luck!!! My disclaimer...I am not responsible if you screw up your phone...:p...that is why there are excellent instructions available. Very hard to screw things up if you follow instructions.

Do they have instructions for AT&T? Do you get tethering? I don't want to lose my tethering either.

LINK: (it's the top most answer from VM support)

VirginMobileUSA Samsung Galaxy S III 4G LTE : Questions, Answers, How To, FAQs, Tips, Advice, Answers, Buying Guide

Those are customer questions and answers, not official answers from VM support. Nothing is official from them that I've heard, but if they allowed the 4.3 update they'll hopefully allow this one too. You just probably won't know until it pops up on your phone :)

4.3+ doesnt remove tethering but a carrier can remove it in any update so ask people on your carrier

I think I will pass for now as I read on this forum where many members lost tethering when they updated from 4.1.2. using AT&T.
I don't like AT&T and will switch to Verizon when my contract is up next March 2015.

I think i read about foxfi making a work around that involves you putting a password on the lock screen. Hope someone can clarify. I dont think any of the carriers in my country physically change the phone's settings to block tethering, its all done at the network end so ive never had to deal with apps like that

CM11 has tethering automatically in its build. It is located under settings/more.../tethering and portable hotspot.

Zero need to install a third party WIFI tool. But you have to be rooted. If you root, you will be happy.

You trying to brick my phone?

Check your device model ! Settings -> About device -> Model number. See the third post for exact supported model numbers. If your device is a totally different model, it will not work (may even brick) !

Samsung i5800, i9000*2, P1000*2, P7100, i9100*2, N7000, P6800, i9300, N7100, i9505, N9005

My phone is Samsung-SGH-1747

Hey all:)
Since this thread is about the update for our device, let's try to keep the topic of rooting the device, or questions about root/roms/etc, out of this thread.

No worries, it makes it easier for folks who want to discuss the proposed update to find info about it.

If you want to discuss rooting your device, or how to do it, please start a thread in the root forum for your carrier....(usually those forums are listed at the bottom of the S3 forum) ;)

Thanks, and carry on :)

HAH!!! Like I said, it will answer some questions for you...I am on Sprint and know nothing about your phone, much less the model number and NO 1 am not trying to brick your phone. That is/was not my intention. If you want to review how to root your phone, that was a good place to start!

Just trying to help you out bro.

Here is what gave me that impression...
The post you made was just after mine and it was pretty clear I was talking about AT&T ;)
Here was that post right before yours:
I'm not sure if it works for at&t but this is confirmed working for Sprint and their MNVOs with 4.3.

Can't have "not sure" with AT&T. ;)
Anybody here done it with AT&T and S3?

I see my mistake now...My mouse has been acting funny. Time to swap it out. So the thread I was reviewing in response to your question was regarding ATT rooting specific to you, but somehow the link that I actually pasted was from a previous "copy/paste" I made in another post helping another guy out on a completely different topic. I am terribly sorry about that.

That is the wrong link and since this is not a rooting thread, there are great tips in XDA that will help you. Again, sorry about the mistake...it didn't dawn on me until your last comment that made me think "what did I send him" LOL!!! Sorry bro. I can see why you were looking at your screen cross-eyed now.

I am with AT&T and all I know is that when I tried to tether sometime after upgrading to 4.3, I got a popup message indicating to call 611. I had tried tethering some time ago when I was on 4.1 and it worked. So, either AT&T recently changed their policy on tethering, or 4.3 was the culprit. Unfortunately since I did not check tethering immediately before doing the upgrade, I can' say for sure.
