Hey! After school yesterday, I was using my phone and everything was fine when all of a sudden it started freezing and lagging and the screen flashed a bit and it went dark. Like, darker and dimmer than it should. I got home went into my room and tried doing a hard reset and my phone would vibrate, show the htc logo on a really dim/dark screen, and then turn off again. I know it wasn't dead because I had it on my charger

Having the phone on the charger doesn't mean that the battery isn't dead. It's a charger, not an external power supply. Leave the phone turned off and charging for 24 hours to start. Then you'll know you have a fully charged battery (unless the phone totally died and won't even charge the battery, which doesn't sound like your problem.)
If the phone turns on and works at that point, you know the original problem was a dead battery. (Running the phone with the charger plugged in doesn't keep the battery charged with most phones, it just discharges the battery slower. The phone has to be off to charge.)
