Brother bought a moto x, sealed, off ebay .
It was sold as unlocked but wasn't so got an unlock code and when used the phone would not work with any network.

What could be the reasons?

Sounds like the IMEI/ESN could have been blocked - that usually happens when a device is reported stolen.

Forgot to say I'm in UK, but thanks. Its from an eBay shop so will hopefully return.

Does that ESN/IMEI check not work internationally? I figured it would since it's an International Mobile Station Equipment Identity number.

Maybe but he says its not blocked, so I guess he checked the number.
Could a dodgy unlock code cause this issue?

Hmm, I'm really not sure. It's been a few years since I used an unlock code, but did the phone give any message like "Unlock Successful" when the code was entered?

Might as well check the IMEI for yourself just be sure though.

Ok, had a chat. Originally it stated it need to be unlocked, had 2 codes and after the first it no longer asked to be unlocked.

Tried his "Three" sim card and did not work.
Tried a "Giffgaff" sim card and it works but doesn't want to stay with them as they have poor data service.

Has tried second code and still the same.
Has spoke to "Three" and they state it should work.

He is gonna pop round and try my sim which is "Tesco"

Yeah that's the next step.
We tried my sim and it worked and then we tried his sim in my phone and it asked for a sim lock code. Reading up it looks like this may be a common thing with "Three" sims when swapped to different phone, so off to get another and see how that goes.

Thanks for your help, at least its not the phone by the looks of it.

Giffgaff runs on O2 and i think Tesco does too so maybe its locked to o2?
When he puts in the Three sim, does it ask for a code or just not work?
If it doesnt ask for a code but doesnt connect then its probably a dodgy sim :thumbup:

When he first put the sim in it asked for a code, code entered but still no connection. Put in my phone it asked for a code and when the same code was used it wouldn't accept it.
Yeah tesco is O2 so I guess it could still be locked.
He got a puk code off Three but no success.

Isnt the puk code just for transfering your phone number?
I think if it only asked for an unlock code once then the code worked and its unlocked but the 3 sim is faulty :thumbup:

If a phone is SIM-locked it should tell you when you insert the wrong SIM, something like "Invalid SIM". However if a phone is IMEI/ESN blacklisted, it might appear to work and be registered on the network, but it won't be able to make calls, nor do SMS or data. Or it just won't be able to register on the network at all, and likely go "Emergency calls only", but it won't be able to.

PUK code is pin unlock code when you go crying to the network 'cos you locked yourself out after three attempts

PAC code is Port Authorization Code which you get off your network so you can make your current number work on a new network sim. It's supposed to take like, a day but these networks do play silly beggars over it (I'm still waiting over a fortnight now so gave up & used the second sim they provided with a new number :mad:

).

Ok, instead of waiting for his new sim, he bought a second hand moto x, which came up cheap and local, and all is working as it should.

So I guess it must have been a fault with the phone?

is it blocked?
