Thanks sulsano! That's an interesting development since I wrote the guide last June. Unfortunately, I do not have an i9500 octa core to test it out on myself, as I always have an in-built suspicion of guides published by the International Business Times. They have, in the past, caused more problems for the Rooting - Dummies Guide than they have solved.

Have you used this IBT guide on a stock, un-rooted, Samsung firmware to root a phone?

Home button not necessary ?

I can't believe that an "android geek" website is giving out wrong information still. S4 is not previous generation Galaxy S series. You do not, I repeat, DO NOT need to press all three buttons and hold it like a mannequin forever until you see the message show up. Many S4 owners also have problem with their phones doing endless loop of restarts when trying all three buttons method and get annoyed and frustrated because recovery mode never seem to initiate. The problem is pressing all three buttons!!!

Listen up, on S4, you only have to press VOLUME UP button and POWER BUTTON at the same time. And keep holding it until the actual recover options appear on your phone screen. Do not let go when you see that little message show up on upper left screen. Keep holding it until you actually see the recovery options before you on your screen. DO NOT HOLD THE HOME BUTTON WHATSOEVER!!! Now, if you see that your phone is going into another restart without options appearing, just hold the VOLUME UP button and hold it until you see the recovery options show up on your screen.

So to summarize, to enter recovery mode on your Galaxy S4, it is VOLUME UP + POWER BUTTON. That's it. Ignore the HOME button holding nonsense.

Ironass, I just updated my i9500 to 4.4.2 last night and will be rooting it over the weekend. Will keep posted

Have asked the question over on the PhilZ, i9500, xda forum, here.

So, lets see if I...

1. Get an answer

2. Get a sensible answer

I would normally get Syd to test it but he doesn't have the i9500... besides, his i9505 is still recovering from my last test.

I know... but I couldn't find a video that showed the double button method on the S4. Besides, the Dummies Guide covers all firmware versions from the original 4.2.2, which used the 3 button method. ;)

Give me a break... it is a Dummies Guide... most of the people just look at the pictures anyway!

Ironass

you were right about the article; it didn't root my S4

Thanks sulasno! I only have to see the name, "International Business Times", and I immediately become suspicious. So many people have fouled up following their guides. Hell, they even quote me in some of them! :stupid:

I downloaded a later copy of CF-Auto-Root-ja3g-ja3gxx-gti9500 and i9500 is rooted :)

That's the one in the Rooting Galaxy S4 - Dummies Guide. Tried and tested.

going to play with the bootanimation.zip but found that the files are in qmg extensions

That's more Hawker's area of expertise I believe. You may find problems getting an answer from him as he is still getting over the shock of the British changing their

PhilZ Recovery 6.24.8 is up! :)

"* fix when quickly doing two gesture actions one after the other, highlighted menu could be validated
we now allow gesture actions only when the previous one is terminated
set these default gesture actions:
* swipe left = screen off
* swipe right = increase brightness
* press 1 sec and lift = show log
* press 2 sec and small move = screen shot
merge "Only init legacy property environment once"
Installing multiple pre-kitkat packages in succession may cause
legacy_properties_init() to fail. Only initialize the workspace once and
then just do path renames for all subsequent requests to enable legacy
