Verizon LG G2 Can't Mute Ringer unless you mute all notifications

Long story short: linked ringer and notifications was introduced in Android 4.0 ICS. Half the people hate it because the ringer volume and notification volumes cannot be adjusted independently, and the other half love it because they can turn down the volume just by using the volume down key, instead of only turning the volume down on the ringer when your notifications are going full blast in a meeting.

There are apps in the Play Store that have a work around (end effect is that the ringer and notification work as if unlinked) for this, but you will have to read the app description very carefully: if it doesn't mention unlinking ringer and notification volumes, then it probably doesn't.

I hate the fact the the text message volume is tied to music, video games and other media. pretty sure it's an lg thing since my bionic which ran ICS was never like this. it was tied into notification volume which is where it should be along with email and any other notification.

Oh, we all have separate sliders for ringtone and notifications.

So as I mentioned above, it started with ICS, HOWEVER, some carriers' versions have unlinked them again (adding to the confusion).

Where it comes to light for me, is if you put all volume sliders at zero EXCEPT the ringtone, and you send yourself a notification, it SHOULD be silent (since the slider is at zero), but it ISN'T silent unless the ringtone volume slider is also set to zero. That's what we mean by linking.

I tested the notification sounds carefully

1) With all sounds off
2) With Ringtone off
3) With Notification Off
4) With Media off
5) With every combination of Ringtone/Notification/Media sliders off

With the exception of Alarms which you can set to override the sound settings the notification sound would only be heard when i moved the Notifications slider on. However there is a option in the sounds menu called 'Voice Notifications' if that is on then if your media is off you wont hear any 'new sms or incoming call' notification if its on it will work even if the ringtone and notification sliders are off.

If there are any other notification options that remain on even while the notification slider is off i couldnt find it.

I hadn't really noticed it until I saw the thread. Then again, I'm usually either all on, or off. I can't think of any time I would want the ringer off completely, but still get blasted with notfications. My Nexus was completely unlinked through the ROM, and I hadn't looked for any workaround on this one. I'll have to keep an eye out tho
