need to root my s3 international version i9300 so i can run kitkat 4.4 and sort out poor battery. my phone is factory unlocked.

i have a MAC not a pc

everything online is unclear and only specify details for rooting on windows. I only have access to a mac.

I'm running jelly bean 4.3

tried loooots of stuff but can't seem to do the trick.

completely new to rooting so some clear steps would be much appreciated

Hi - Welcome to Android Forums.
I don't have access to a mac, however good choice for a phone - do you have any issues with connecting to the mac? A few of my friends have macs and have moved away from the s3 solely because of connection problems.

But to try and help out, have a look at this
thanks! no i did have some problems with connecting to the mac but they're all sorted now. I've already seen that page you linked and it doesn't work! i really want to root my phone now been trying for ages :(

maybe you might understand my problem. i followed some steps and was role to load a file that i put on my phone by pressing volume up home and power. instead of taking me to a black and blue screen like the video had, it took me to a screen with the adroid logo with its belly open. i didn't know what to do

What you're seeing there is the stock recovery I think and what you want for flashing things is (with the blue text) clockworkmod (CWM). This has to be flashed onto the s3 using a computer (unless you're already rooted) .
I don't use Mac so I can't really help sorry. Can't you get access to a windows machine?

What you may need to do to flash the file via the mac is to go into download mode? Which is volume down + home + power.

Can I ask during the process in the video at which part did it stop working/not work?

so what do i do
hold the buttons and choose what

Well first off - what process are you following? Do you have a page reference?

If you have to install a zip file you may need to have a custom recovery already installed to allow it work or you may be able to flash it via the stock recovery.

Alternatively if you are using a program such as odin - (not sure if there is a mac version actually?) you will need to flash a .tar file, and that will need download mode (vol down + home + power).

Hopefully this makes sense - just ask if you have any questions - happy to help where I can.

How to Root Galaxy S3 on Mac OSX!
I'm using that process and I'm stick on step 11
it takes me to a screen with android logo with belly open instead
if you go right down to the bottom of the the page (How to Root Galaxy S3 on Mac OSX!) it has an FAQ...it says what to do but I'm unsure how

Fantastic! Progress!

OK - in odin on the mac - there should be a check box - (if its the same as pc) it will be in on the left hand side near the middle - it will have auto-reboot or something similar. Make sure it is unchecked.
Put the phone into download mode and flash the cwm file again. Once it's passed unplug the phone and switch off. Boot into recovery pressing and holding Vol up+ home+ power. Does it work this time?
