Official Goodbye Gnex Thread

Excellent thread!

I got rid of mine a few months ago, traded it to a friend who agreed to help with some plumbing.

After the shiny wore off, I hated every second I was stuck with that piece of garbage. The battery was abysmal. The EXTENDED battery would lose 10% during my 20 minute drive to work. It was far from mobile because I was charging it constantly. The antenna was useless. I couldn't get signal at my desk where EVERY other phone I EVER tried got several bars. It took forever to reconnect when it did get a signal. I could go on.

I couldn't in good conscious sell it because I felt guilty inflicting that pain onto anyone else. I planned on just spiking it onto a nice slab of concrete but real-world necessities came into play. I explained carefully to my friend how bad it was but he was adamant he wanted it. You can't help some people. Remarkably he's still my friend.

After reading all the above, I realize I must have gotten a lemon.

My life brightened when it left my house. A weight was lifted, I could smell better and food tasted more vibrant!

Good riddance lousy GNex. You shan't be missed.

Congrats on the Note 3, DC! :)
Liking it stock, or looking to root?

The main thing I am always looking for in a device is good battery life.

This phone is pretty dam good, I had about 4 hours screen time yesterday and it was without charge for 18 hours (long day right?) and it was still at 40%....awesome stuff.

Anyhow I am still toying around with the idea of rooting it, idk yet with all the stuff about knox going on.

@Rich maybe you just got a bad extended battery, mine were both pretty good and lasted around 30 hours.

My purchase of Galaxy Nexus coincided with the beginning of my life's dark era. In the same December I got my GNex, I graduated from college, but my family had an unfortunate financial downturn, my mother had a serious health issue, my sister struggled in her grad school, and I had to start working full time instead of applying to medical schools. I'm not blaming the phone for those events, but I find it funny how things are turning out better as this phone is about to retire.

Yes, mom is alive and well, sister now has a well-salaried full-time job, my dad switched to a better job, and I'm applying to medical schools this year.

At least everything turned up :)

Some people can't afford college at all, let alone grad school. Good luck!

So... this thread has pretty much ended, but I wanted to share that I will be officially moving on from the GNex on May 1st. I am posting because I purchased my Nexus 5 last week. Now, I'm just riding out the last of my Verizon contract. This may be the end of unlimited data, but at least my carrier won't be able to stop my from buying a phone that I want.

Both great devices--nice to have experienced the evolution / transition from the GNex to the N5.

Say "hi" here: http://androidforums.com/nexus-5/789625-official-i-just-ordered-nexus-5-thread.html

I know this thread is pretty much dead...but has anyone that was on an unlimited data plan regret the move for a better phone? My g'nex gives me hell some days but I love/hate the phone. I am thinking of pre-ordering an s5 or going with a G2. Your feedback is much appreciated.

I don't regret moving on but I could have stayed with the Nexus. It's a great phone when I bought it and was smooth as butter when I sold it. :D

No regrets, either.

I was indeed unlimited on VZW and now have 2.5GB on T-Mobile.

But honestly, I'm usually near a wifi signal that means I don't come anywhere near the limit (and its a soft limit on T-Mobile since they'll just throttle you (LOL, your data speed anyways :p) even after you hit your limit.

It might be different if I didn't usually have a wifi signal or was a big bandwith user on my phone (i.e., tethering or NetFlix, etc.).

VZW wanted to hit me $299 to updgrade my phone to a Note III / S4 while at the same time putting me on a share everything plan that would cost more per month. I bought a Moto X Developer Edition full price ($450) and kept my unlimited. IMO the X is everything that the GNex was supposed to be, just done right.

Just got a working Kitkat ROM on my VZW GNex and its brilliant. This will definitely hold me over until I can eventually get an HTC M8.

Which ROM?

I'm back on my GN for awhile.

I had switched to a S4 last summer, but while the hardware was great and it was fast. I just CAN'T stand Touchwiz... Being on VZW I couldn't even get off of it by rooting :(

after the S4 hit the bathroom floor, I figure I'm going to hold off on anything else for a month or 2.

I have VZW unlimited which I plan on keep till the end of time :p

I never dirtyflashed a rom, but I went from stock to that without resetting. I just wiped the cache partitions. One boot up after the install it acted identical to the KK OTA on my N7 (or my current Moto X) where it goes to the "Updating X of Y" then loaded up with a fully working KK.

I had a fully funtionig OTA and WUGS ready to go, but that was impressive.

SlimKat. For the most part, its pretty stable, especially considering I technically dirty flashed from an old JellyBean SlimROM. A couple apps needed to be reinstalled and the cache cleared, but the ROM itself is pretty fast and works great.

My turn. I'm still sporting the gnex that you all bought as a "thank you" for the epoch thread and stuff. I must say now that the phone is nearing the end of it's service for me, that I am emotional about it. Man, the memories of the waiting for it, the epoch thread, the wonderful rooting and rom'ing.

I'm going to upgrade the entire family. The problem with the M8 is that it has a fixed battery, but the call quality is superb. I missed the great call quality and reception I had with the Droid X. The Gnex wasn't as good.

The problem with the S5 is that call quality sux. I called my wife from the VZW store on two different S5's and she said the sound was metallic and weird. She said the m8 was very good.

So, I may wait and try the g3. But it's definitely the end times for this gnex *sniff*. Do you think I'm sporting an old phone? My wife still has the droid incredible! :p

My phone is at the end of life too. It's painfully slow and I recently cracked the screen by leaning into my truck. The crack is isn't all that bad really but it's just time for a new phone. I am definitely keeping my unlimited plan and will be trying to get the VZW store to upgrade me with unlimited data. I've heard it's possible.

I'm really struggling with buying a new device though. How do I know which phone is going to get so much development activity like the Gnex did? I was thinking about the S5 but it seems to be a shiny new version of the S4. The HTC M8 looks awesome and I loved my DINC, but I just don't know about HTC on VZ and rooting and ROM'ing.

Someone please tell me what to do! I want to be able to flash ROMs as I have with the Gnex and keep my unlmited data plan on VZW.

If this works let me know. I'd love to not have to buy outright (which I will before giving up unlimited)

The short answer is, not anytime soon, if ever. VZW has absolutely NO interest in allowing another unlocked phone on their network and Google isn't interested kissing their butt to get one on VZW. (note: I actually bought a dev edition S4 with this hope but you can't get away from Touchwiz, and the community is almost non-existent)

The "only" possible hope is VoLTE (voice over LTE). The supposed VZW timeline calls for putting out the first VoLTE phones the end of this year begining of next.

These phones won't need/use CDMA... so ideally the US will finally join the rest of the world with their phones not being carrier specific. I still have my doubts that VZW won't slip something in to lock out other phones though.

For new phones. "supposedly" the MOTOx +1 is hitting sometime this summer.

After using an S4 for 6 months. I have ABSOLUTELY no interest in ever owning another touchwiz phone. I've looked at the M8 also, its a very nice phone, (I'm also leery of the built in battery)

At this point if I can get a couple months out of my GN, I'll probably sit tight and see how the cards fall.

So I didn't upgrade yet....love the GN3 but hate touchwiz more than it hates itself. I love the motox, g2 was pretty good as well but I think when its all said and done I'm going to get the motox.

I may be changing phones soon, just wish the Moto X was a little cheaper. Not sure I want to pay $50 extra, over the Nexus 5, for the Moto X.
