Knock on doesn't want to work anymore.

I had this lg g2 since January 2014. It was working great since yesterday morning even I tried to knock on when the screen is of and nothing. Out works when the screen is on and doing knock off. I calibrated the phone, restarted, and a factory reset. And nothing. As I tried doing something on the memo there's a spot that skips near on the top of the screen.

Your G2 received official 4.4.2 Kit Kat upgrade via OTA ? If so is one of the broke G2 after Kit Kat. Sorry, Factory Data Reset don't solve after Kit Kat trauma. I'm just wait LG find a fix , otherwise goodbye LG.

I had/have the same problem. Knock off works fine but knock on currently works ~10% of the time.

I purchased my Sprint model in January and all was fine for a little more than a month. Then one day knock on would only work occasionally. I narrowed it down to a heat issue. It seemed the phone would knock on fine when cold but if it was even a little warm (not hot by any means just warm) it wouldn't work at all. My phone does not have an over heating issue at all. It gets a little warm from normal use but never hot!

After being frustrated with not having the feature I used most I sent it back to LG for repair. LG sent the phone back with a repair notice saying only "outdated software, software updated". WTH this means I couldn't tell you but knock on was working for the most part. When I sent the phone in it was on 4.2 and was still on 4.2 when I received it back. I updated to 4.4.2 the night I received the phone back and all was still fine. A few days later and knock on seems to be dying a slow death again. It's working intermittently. Seems to be a similar issue with warming but not as consistent. It sometime won't work even when cold. Currently it works around 50% of the time but seems to be getting worse.

I'm not sending it in again. The first time was enough. I would send it in again if I knew they would fix it but it seems LG has their head up !@#

I'll be getting rid of the G2 in the next few months if they can't figure it out.

That's my .02.

I have never had any issues with the knock off feature. Have any of you maybe tried reflashing the stock rom back to the phone and see if that works. Like the guy stated above it could be a bad download. Which happens. Another thing you could try if you wanna look into it is Cyanogenmod 11. Has knocking and the status tap features. Works wonderful.

I'm stock so it's not a ROM issue. Proximity sensor is clean and works fine for auto brightness and bring to ear answering.

I would send it back to LG again but it'll probably be the same result with no explanation.

I'm getting tired of this phone. It's great otherwise but I use knock on too much to just accept it not working.

Also, knock on has pretty much stopped working completely now. It may work ~5% of the time.

Largepkg: that's not good.

This is a serious suggestion... give the phone to someone else to try the Knock On feature and watch them when they use it. Do they have a problem too?

I wager, for a class of owners (probably not you), they are tapping too hard and as a consequence there is too long of a delay between taps for it to register a double-tap for the function to work properly...

In another thread, I might have suggested to you or someone else to try tapping very lightly and very quickly.

I'm not putting it past the probability that your phone has a HW or a SW issue; for the latter maybe some program on Sprint's load or a download you made colliding with the function. I know, it's not practical for you to uninstall all your downloads, nor the bloatware by the carrier.

Have you tried installing and running Touch Test to see if all parts of the screen are responsive and there is no discontinuities?

A couple of things to note.

I purchased the device from Amazon as a contract phone. It was too good to pass up at the time. It was only $.01 back on 1/1/14.

I originally took the phone to a local Sprint authorized store when I first had the knock on issue. They told me they could look at it but since I purchased through Amazon I would need to deal with them or LG directly for repairs/replacement. That's what prompted me to contact LG and send the device to them for repair. Was the CSR correct? Will a call to Sprint potentially get this resolved or a new phone?

As for how you tap/knock the device, it has no effect. Hard, soft, slow, fast, multiple taps, locations, I've tried it all. Hell, knock OFF works beautifully! I'm not a noob to technology either. My 12 year old plays with it all the time as well and it's no different. The fact that knock on died a slow death twice, now leads me to believe it's software not hardware related. Especially since they sent the repair note saying "outdated software, updated software". I just can't figure out what software they would have updated? I've tried multiple factory resets as well. Thinking a reset without downloading or updating any apps might reveal an error with an app. That didn't work. How could LG resolve this with a supposed software update just for it to happen again? UGH...

There's too many other people out there with similar issues for it to be isolated to me.

The touch screens works perfectly as far as I can tell. No dead areas anywhere. Touch test confirmed this. I was able to draw a line around the whole screen with no breaks. Just no knock on.

Well if knock off is working but not knock on, then it sounds like software, and it seems like it's something that is getting loaded on as part of the Carrier's distribution of code.

The fact that an FDR doesn't clear it is super bothersome but SHOULD help LG track it down.

I could imagine a scenario where the Sprint ROM had a problem, LG fixes your device with some kernel modification (that isn't part of a Sprint OTA update), and then there's another Sprint ROM OTA update that you load that hoses your phone again.

I am not experiencing this at all with my VZW model. Note how long VZW is spending with the device before releasing the OTA for KK vs. the other carriers. People moan and groan, but I think personally, VZW is more thorough in it's compatibility and regression testing.

I would contact LG and complain again. It's just too odd. Bringing the phone out of a low-power state has got to be trickier than putting it into a low-power state, so it seems there is some low-level "interrupt" or "wake" logic that is running in the background that is responsible for waking the device... and it could be over-written or molested with an OTA... or a carrier bloatware app that is colliding.

One critical parameter being changed, possibly an unintentional memory read or write would be all it takes.

It's worth going back to LG and pushing for a resolution.

The phone is really great. Seems a shame it's not working right for you.

Dont know if you have the white or black one the lg website offer a update but as your firmware is so new it say that one was issued on the April first which is April fools day I Dont trust but here is the lg website for your device

LG Help: Product Support and Troubleshooting | LG USA

That's the KK update. I updated to KK the day I received the device back from LG. KK isn't the issue here. It was like this on JB and then worked fine for a few days after the LG repair and KK update. Then slow death to final death for knock on.

I'm going to call Sprint tomorrow. I'll let you all know what they say.

The thing is I can't even in good conscious sell this phone. At least not without disclosing the issue which will devalue the phone that much more.

*Update*

I contact Sprint this morning about the issue. Since I didn't purchase insurance through Sprint my options were limited and listed below.

1. I could go through LG once again. Sending them the device to repair.

2. Take the device to an authorized Sprint store and have them keep the device to try and diagnose the problem. If they're able to repair, it will cost me $25. If not then I could choose a like device for a $75 replacement fee.

3. Pay $75 (on my statement) right now for an advanced replacement G2. Once received I'll need to send my defective device back to Sprint within 3 days of receipt of the replacement device.

I wasn't about to send the device back to LG. My reasoning is, it cost me approximately $15 for shipping and insurance and I'll be without a quality phone for another 10 days. Only to more than likely go through the same process again.

Taking it to a Sprint store will more than like result in a similar experience and it will either cost me $25 for a probable temp fix or $75 to choose another phone. Plus I'll be without my device again for a few days while they determine a fix.

I chose option #3. I don't mind the $75 as much as not having the phone for any period of time. I'll have a replacement phone in hand to play with for a few days to confirm it's acting correctly prior to sending them my defective unit back. Hopefully I don't get a buggy unit.

Time will tell...

I received my replacement G2 yesterday and have used it quite a bit. All the features on this G2 are working fine so far. I was a little nervous about other issues some are having but all is well, again so far. GPS locks instantaneously! I was concerned about this.

The only real problem is the Sprint towers. LTE is still an issue on this G2 just like the last. It still hangs up in 3G when in a known LTE area. Toggling airplane mode gets LTE back, but really? I should need to do this?

Anyway, knock on is back and I'm as happy as I can be until Sprint fixes their towers.
