Root [Verizon] verifying unroot

Somehow, I think you need to reinstall super user (to gain root access), use "Triangle Away" to reset the trip counter (a root-only app), then unroot by flashing a firmware via ODIN.

Now, are you on 4.3 with Knox and the locked bootloader? If the Knox counter has been tripped, I'm not sure if that "Triangle Away" app will reset it.
(you can find out the counter in download mode on your device (home/volume down/power)

Oh, cool then. I'm not sure, but I think flashing a custom recovery or kernel will trip the counter.
When you say, "the custom logo on boot" is this what you see?

I've read here that some folks who are stock have had it too:
Unlock "Custom" Icon at initial boot - xda-developers

Have you done a factory reset?
Last resort you could try, flash the latest firmware to your device via a computer program called ODIN.

yes i have that screen you posted. i have 4.3, but no mention of knox on the odin screen. with the new phone and old showing warranty bit:0 i dont want to invoke it to change to 1

will flashing the latest (which i have} cause issues?

I don't think so, it will just override whatever is currently on the device. Just as long as its 4.3 and not a lower version.
