Root Rooting and OTA Updates.

If you only root your n5 and don't use another ROM, you'll get the ota from Google. Applying the update will unroot, along with custom kernel and recovery will be flashed over and reverted to stock.
There are ways around some of these limitations. It depends how you've rooted and what you've done with root.

I rooted my Nexus 5 and got the OTA update same as if I wasn't rooted. Everything just works. Still rooted and everything. :)

It all depends on 2 things:
1)What you do after you root
If you stay on the stock ROM and don't mess with too much, you can likely take the OTA without issues.

2)What the OTA does
Most of the time the OTA checks certain parts of the system to make sure they haven't been changed before applying the update.

Sometimes you can flash them on a rooted ROM and still maintain root, other times itll unroot you and you'll have to reinstall a custom recovery and flash superuser again.
