Help Recently, battery barely lasts 3 hours

I have owned and loved my Nexus 5 since December.
This past week something happened and I can't figure it out.

The phone is always warm to the touch at the top half, and the battery barely lasts for 3 hours on standby. an hour if under use typing emails etc...

I started typing an email this morning fresh off the charger and after approx.10 minutes of typing my battery was at 75%.

Nothing in my day-to-day operation has changed, no new programs downloaded. I close all programs after use so there should be nothing running in the background.

I started writing this post at 58%. I am now at 51% and the phone has been on standby the whole time.

Something is up. Any ideas? I'm stumped.

It really sounds like you have an app or something causing you trouble.

Install wake lock detector and run it for a bit https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.uzumapps.wakelockdetector

See if you can pinpoint the problem.

I haven't installed any new apps in weeks and my phone runs pretty lean.

Check what is stated as using the battery in Settings>Battery

Usually the screen has the top percentage, but if an app or the OS is misbehaving they may be first or at least unusually high.

For example I get good/reasonable battery life and my stats are as follows:

Screen 41%
Google Search 8%
Voice Calls 8%
Android System 7%
...

Nothing out of the ordinary. K9 Mail is the majority battery user as it has always been.
Battery was flat dead by noon. was on the road and had no phone/email/gps. was killing me!

Do you have the app chronus installed?

It got an update that causes a bug that severly drains battery. Mine went from 100% to 73% in under an hour this morning

The dev has issued another update to fix it, so make sure all your applications are up to date.

I dont have that app.

I haven't installed any new apps in weeks and my phone runs pretty lean.

It doesn't always have to be a new app. Just last week my phone was doing the same thing. I could just watch the percentage drop.

I ended up tracing it to my exchange account that was previously working just fine. There was a problem with they exchange server at work and my phone was stuck constantly trying to sync, but it couldn't.

In return, the phone was heating up in my pocket and I could lose 20% in an hour without touching my phone.

This really sounds like an app or service issue to me. It can't hurt anything to explore the option.

The choices of culprits are limited. If you don't think it's something running on the phone that's causing issues, what does that leave? Hardware issue? If that's the case, you'll have to replace it or repair it...

I installed the wakelock app, but says it will not work because it requires root access.

My battery usage screen shows:
K9 Mail 59%
Android OS 12%
Google Services 9%
Android System 5%
Screen 5%
Cell Standby 4%
Wi Fi 3%
Phone Idle 2%

No sign of that camera bug.

If it is the bug, i can't wait for a patch. Looks like I will need to buy a new phone on the web until the patch is released.

a mail app consuming 6 times more battery than almost single digit android services makes no sense. that is your wakelock. can you uninstall it temporarily and get by by gmail and imap for a day and see what happens?

K9 has always been >50% its the only app I use on the phone.
I will try uninstalling it over the weekend maybe but I cant during the week.
Doesnt make sense that everything will be status quo for months then for no reason get kicked in the butt like that.

i understand what you are saying but if you look at post # 7 of this thread brian76 had something similar problem. mailserver failing to sync and heating up and draining battery. IIRC youtube app was doing something like this sometime ago.
i just googled it. it seems since last november k-9 mail was flagged as a drainer in google forums by various users. latest post was on april 27th. version was 4.803.
some of them temporary solved it by assigning internal memory instead of sd card memory.
according to one user who just had the problem for a week, happened after an update. is there any way for you to uninstall the update only and see if it improves?

Thanks. Everything is saved to internal memory.
I have the same version 4.803.

I will try uninstalling this weekend. Going to be a pain due to multiple email addresses in it all with different imap and pop settings.

Will advise this weekend.

Thank you all for your help!
