Just download quickmount Google play.
Root not even necessary. Order otg USB cable amazon.com. one end to phone other end to USB HD.
Use your favorite file manager. You will see USB storage. You can navigate and copy data from your phone to your HD. With custom ROMs don't even think you need an app. After I flashed slimkat I connect external HD straight to my phone and backed it up.
Tested with fat32 not sure if NTFS is possible but never tried it. However heard of app called NTFS mounter.

Just so you know, with SlimKat go to your settings, developer options and enable root...

The USB OTG are nice and can come in handy. I haven't used mine much but it's nice to know it's there just in case. The one I have has the extra power extension. That can definitely come in handy too. :D

It's great for throwing recovery and rom on a flash drive while you're sitting at the bar and somebody asks about your software... For a few beers I'll root and rom your phone right now lol
