Track someone using their phone GPS

Before I begin, I am not being a creep. I have a legitimate reason to do that.

My Dad got diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer about 2 months ago and just finished his 3rd chemo. So far he is holding up well, but to keep himself fit, he goes for a long walk in early morning and in the evening. He does not like anyone accompany him, as he considers as a sympathy and he hates that.

His health, the way it is, we all at home are worried that something may strike when he is out and since the area he goes for walking is not crowded at all for someone to find him. In ideal case, I am looking for an app, where he leaves his phone GPS on and I can track him on my phone. Set a target area where he usually goes for a walk and I get an alert if he goes outside that zone.

In theory, I can just use Android device manager or similar but I wonder if there is any better app than that.

Id search for something a parent would use on a kids phone, not sure what keywords to use but thats how id approach it.
Is he going to knowingly have it on his phone?

Glympse
He has to launch the app before he leaves and he sets the amount of time it can track him. So he has complete control. He sends a glympse to as many people as he chooses to their phone or email. Receivers of the glympse do not need the app - just a browser

+1 for Google+. Once he's configured to share his location with you, it's an entirely automatic process - and works pretty reliably.

Install it on his and then you can track it, take a photo with the phones camera......

This is the easiest way. G+ should already be on Android phones. Have him share his location with you. Then you can track him from your phone via your G+ app or from any PC by logging into G+. You can have him allow any number of people to track his location.

Yes.

Here's a trick.......Create two new circles and add friends to them.

Pinpoint Location: add everyone you want to have pinpoint location knowledge

City Location: add everyone you want to have broader location information

Then give those circles the appropriate access to your location. This allows you quick controls over who has what information about your location.

Launch the Google+ Android app > Locations.

No way to do it from the web (that I know of, at least).

Seems to be whenever their location actually does update - using the magical fused location provider in Android, so the refresh rate while the ~~target~~ person of interest is on the move is faster than when they're camping at their house.

It also gives you an indication of how stale the location information is. "John Doe was here 2 minutes ago" and that sort of thing.

No way to do it from the web (that I know of, at least).

On a browser you have to go to their profile. Then under their name in the header it will say "Currently in London, England" and you can click there to get a map of their location

I have tasker scripted to locate my phone via text message trigger. You can always put that on his phone if he doesn't mind. Used it many times to find out where I left my phone.
