Are Google Drive files copied to the Android or just stored in the cloud?

I copied about 3GB of photos and videos to my Google Drive folder on my computer and it synched with the Drive folder on my Note3. Are these files actually being copied to the Note3 or are they in the cloud and just stream when viewed on the phone? I ask because my data usage seemed to increase by a couple gigs today, after I placed these files in my Drive folder.

Thanks.

I forgot about Data Usage under settings. I just checked and Drive only has 4.30MB and Tethering 2.57GB and other apps in the MB average. Interesting, because I am not sure how I used that many GB today tethering....

EDIT: Nevermind, I'm an idiot.....it was the same video files being synched to my notebook that I tethered to, to the same Drive account....I placed them into Drive on a different computer....

Thanks.
