Every so often, my phone decides to run with all the speed of someone with two broken legs.
I tap the screen or push the buttons; nothing happens. The LED's at the bottom normally light up briefly upon touching the screen/using buttons, indicating that it received my input; when this happens, they either do not light up, or they sort of glitch-flash like a lightbulb that is nearly burnt out. Every 10 seconds or so, the screen will "catch up" to my input and scroll up/down, accept/cancel a dialogue, or whatever the case may be, but with a severely impaired frame rate. Occasionally, it will restart itself after this happens.
Whenever this happens, I have taken to pressing the Home button, then setting my phone down and playing the waiting game. This way, once the Home screen appears, it acts as a sort of visual indicator of when my phone has pulled itself out of the latency ditch. Then I restart my phone. Sometimes I do it up to 2 or 3 times a day and it gets very tedious.
It seems to be utterly arbitrary; sometimes it functions smoothly with no hiccups, and other times (at least once a day, usually more), I encounter this flaw. This has persisted since about a month after it was purchased new in September 2013.
Neither sound nor video seem to be affected. If it freezes while I'm on a call, listening to a song, or streaming a YouTube video, the respective call/music/video continues working fine - no lost connections or glitchy sound; however no touch/button input is recognized.
Some details on how I use my phone:
- I've installed little more than your average vanilla apps (Facebook, Chrome, etc). Nothing problematic or particularly hard on the system.
- I have only 1 active home page out of the possible 7, and use only 1 widget and 1 shortcut.
- I regularly clean out app caches and junk files.
- I've "Greenified" almost everything (except Clock, Facebook, Gmail, hello sms, and system processes) to keep things from running unnecessarily in the background. (My phone is NOT rooted, which just means that they don't auto-hibernate, I do it manually every so often via a home screen shortcut).
I have the Samsung Galaxy Rugby Pro (SAMSUNG-SGH-I547) from AT&T, and it's running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.
I had similar problems with a different Android phone I had a few years ago (the Galaxy Proclaim), however I attributed it to the fact that it was a very small phone and not very powerful.
Is there a way to fix this that I haven't thought of, or is this latency idiosyncratic of Android and therefore unavoidable? Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks for sticking around and reading this far.
