What is the best way to backup and restore phone? Under settings I have checked to backup to my email address in gmail but I do not know what is backed up or how to restore. Is it better to use an app for this and which is the best one.

Battery is lasting from 6am till 5pm. The usage meter says my main consumption of battery is the android system with 17% screen with 16% android os with 14% and android core apps with 10%.

How can I improve this without turning off everthing in my phone?

Helium works fairly well for app data backups. With the paid version you can back up the app data to your Google Drive or other cloud account. It will also transfer app data between two phones. It does not require root, but you do have to hook you phone up to a PC to enable backups. After that it will work until the next time you reboot the phone.

You should use Kies 3 on your PC for back up or use Google Kies | SUPPORT | SAMSUNG

As for battery I loved the usage that my S5 gets and I am on it all day I have been using battery doctor and clean master and its been great and really been helping keep the battery and overall phone performance to a peak, its a great phone too, much much better than my previous.

This will make a total IMAGE backup of the phone, just like cloning the hard drive on a PC.

It can do a total restore to exactly like you had it, passwords, features, anything..... or you can pick and choose what you want to restore.
ie, Contacts only, pictures only, etc...

Make double damn sure that you "Select All" when you do the backup.

It requires the USB 3.0 cable that came with the phone or equal.
It will NOT work with a cheap POS usb 2.0 cable.

First, make sure all of the bloatware is disabled.

2nd, back out of all apps and close them (double menu long press, close all)

3rd which is more drastic...
I leave GPS on High Accuracy, have Battery Doctor installed.

When I know I won't be using the phone for a while, I bring up the BD Switcher window and toggle off Data, WiFi, and Bluetooth.

What that does is stop data traffic which is the primary consumer of battery power.
