With older battery chemistry, it used to be that the battery would eventually form a habit of the range you used it, so it was good to drain it from time to time. With modern lithium ion batteries, you never want it fully charged or discharged, as it damages the battery and degrades the usable charge capacity.

Usually there's a software buffer to keep the battery from fully charging (despite what your readout says), and there might also be a buffer at the bottom of the charge window, but if the phone is shutting off suddenly, there might not be. I would caution against fully discharging the battery if at all possible (outside of emergency situations, of course).

Edit: The good news is that phone batteries are very cheap, and if you've damaged your battery and are getting crappy usage out of it, it's pretty easy to replace with the GS5.

Im assuming that during the first charge your google account might have been synchronizing your accounts which could have contributed to the long first charge. If you put an old sd card with photos it will always upload the files to your google photos account. I always kill those type of backups. I only sync contacts and app data, but nothing personal like photos.
