Official "I JUST ORDERED THE NEXUS 5!!!" Thread

Hey guys, thinking about ordering the Nexus 5. I am still on VZW and have two count em yes two Moto X's lol. Want the Nexus 5 for stock experience of course and rooting and messing around.

I was wondering if you all still think its worth it or should I wait? Please help me decide one way or another if I should take the plunge.

Thanks.

It's definitely worth it, the specs still compare relatively well with the brand new phones. The biggest point, since you want to mess around, you can load Android L on it now -- unless you have the Nexus 7 it is likely the only way to get L for the next few months.

Any issues with the battery Bluetooth or GPS? I need both for my job.

I'd say stick it out until whatever is next comes out. The Moto X is comparable at least in my eyes.

With the phone in general or with Android L? Battery is better than the GNex but still isn't great; with moderate use it should last at least 8 hours (as always YMMV). I haven't used the bluetooth much but have not had issues and haven't heard of many problems it; it is Bluetooth 4.0 LE. I'm sure someone else here can talk about Bluetooth experience. I've had no issues with GPS, other than it eats the battery using navigation -- a car charger or external battery is very useful.

If you need it for your job, you won't want to install Android L yet. While L seems stable, on its own, there are some issues and, worse, many apps don't run properly yet. Battery seems surprisingly good so far on L, I've had it on battery for 10 hours today and only used 24% with light use (screen on only 22 minutes).

OTOH, there are a number or ROMs for the Nexus 5, I believe over 20, so lots of good playing around. I'm sure some of them will try adding the features of Android L as they can get them working.

Of course, the Nexus won't work on Verizon, either, so that could be another issue.

Just in general. Android L will be the icing on the cake but not the reason I want. I realize it will not work on Verizon. I was thinking to buy a cheap plan with tmobile. Anyone have any knowledge about that? I recall them having a $30 plan with 100 minutes and 5 gig of data I think.

Yes, T-Mobile has the $30 plan with 100 minutes and 5GB of high speed data (unlimited at 2G speeds after the first 5GB). Just order a SIM from their website and, when you are ready to activate, activate the SIM online.

It's the plan I use and it's awesome if you don't use many minutes. Losing the Google voice workaround back in may was a bummer, but the plan still rocks.

Cool so you have the 30 dollar plan? Nexus 5 takes a Micro Sim card correct? Looks like its 10 bucks on their website. Where can I purchase the 30 dollar per month plan? I've heard that its only available at Walmart? Is this true?

Correct, it takes a micro sim. They generally cost 10 dollars on their website, but sometimes there's a sale to get them for 99 cents or rarely for free. Once you have the sim and the phone, you just follow the directions that come with the sim kit to go on the activation website and fill it out as normal. When it comes time to pick your plan, you select the 30 dollar plan. This is pretty much the only way to get this plan now. There use to be prepaid bundles that included a phone that you could buy at walmart that included this plan, but I believe they are now pretty much impossible to find. If you ask a walmart rep about this plan, they'll not know what your talking about (and this is likely the same reaction you'd get in corporate T-Mobile stores).

Once you have the SIM, you'll want to activate it at the T-Mobile Prepaid Activation webpage. You'll see the $30 plan as one of the options.

Isn't that how it always seems to go? ;)
Definitely lol. Having some strange issues with LTE on t-mobile. I'm supposed to be in a very strong area yet LTE I'm getting one bar switching over to 3G. Quite often. This is at my house. However if I force it to 3G the signal is much stronger and speeds are faster. Do I need to change APN settings or something? Or is it just worth a call to tmobile add some point.? If you guys want me to start a new thread I will so we don't derail this one. Nexus 5 is awesome though I must say.

Did you drill down on the T-Mobile coverage map. The one time I tried T-Mobile here, it looked like I was in good coverage, but I kept finding holes in the coverage (one being my house). When I went back and drilled down on the map I could see the holes in LTE coverage, but I had to go as far down as the map allowed. At the time, I went back to AT&T which gives me good coverage. I wasn't persistent because it was just an experiment to see if the $30 plan would work for me.

That said, I would talk to T-Mobile. There may be something helpful they can do on their end. When I first got my N5, I wasn't getting LTE. I went to AT&T and they took data from my phone and data from my towers and 24 hours later I had excellent LTE signal.

When first using using my nexus 5 it followed the same pattern coverage-wise. I stick to the same travel route all week, so any fluke in coverage is easily noticeable. In areas where I've always had strong LTE, I now have weak LTE that switches between strong H+ and weak LTE frequently, like in my living room. But I just noticed my wife's F6 is sitting on straight 4G in my home as well. May be a network issue now. And yes, I'm on Metro's T-Mobile.
