Throttling to 2G rather that 3G?

Thast's the way the whole industry is going now. (Every few years there's a different fad.) Now it's unlimited data, but if you exceed X amount, it'll take you a month to download your one page bill. (Remember, when cellphones first came out, you got about 15 minutes of talk/month, and that was it. If you tried to make a call after that you'd get a "cannot connect this call" or something similar, depending on your company. And callers got a "temporarily out of service" message. Until the new month started. Unlimited talk? Not even 10 years ago.

Some day, when there's so much infrastructure that most of it goes unused most of the time, they'll add an "unlimited with no speed cap" plan and take another few bucks out of your pocket every month. That's why there's unlimited talk and text now - there's so much unused low-speed bandwidth that they want you to use it (and pay more for the "unlimited" part, of course). It doesn't cost them a penny to let you jabber all day and night.

Kinda ignoring that conversations do evolve.

If peeps start talking about sports they may talk about politics 5 min later.

Discussions are not static.

Spoken conversations, absolutely.

Just like conversions can have multiple topics, forums have multiple threads. Thread = topic ;)

When someone searches google for information about boost throttling and ends up on this thread, they don't want to have to wade through off topic posts to get to the information they need.

Theres nothing wrong with the topic that was discussed, its just not the place for it. :)

k, to anyone confused as to why they restated the already in place throttling, the change was that they used to throttle only 3g... now they throttle 4g, and to the same ridiculously low speeds. i get 1mb/s downloads, thats roughly 10mbps, till i reach the 2.5gb cap, then they only allow 30kb/s, roughly 300kbps

now, i understand the need for throttling... i truly do, this phone is my only means of internet and i use even the fastest internet quite heavily, but at 1mb/s it takes 2500 seconds to use it all up, that is 41 minutes, you get 41 minutes of full speed lte a month, then they cant just drop you to 3g speeds, which would still save them a ton of bandwidth, they drop you to slow 1x speeds, which are nearly unusable

personally, i find that to be completely and utterly ridiculous

That's assuming you're maxing out at 1MB/s for the entire time though, which most people don't do. Even streaming HD video doesn't use that much bandwidth.

then they only allow 30kb/s, roughly 300kbps

That is awfully slow :(

First, i am kind of new to the rooting stuff but I at least replaced my broken screen on my Boost ZTE N9100!

Now to the throttling issue! My new cycle started over the weekend. I had tried to upgrade to the $60 5g plan but the automated system would NOT let me. On top of I was at my new Shrinkage Level of $50 the Auto System would NOT let me pay below my original $55 level! I could Not get a human on the phone for anything and eventually got the "Office is Closed Message" I went ahead and paid the $55 + tax I was able to get a human the NEXt day (Sunday) after purposely entering mistakes to the voice prompts eventually transferred. I explained to the FIRST rep that I was NOT given to option to upgrade to the $60 5g plan as well as I was not allowed to pay below the $55 level even though my Online account info indicated $50 due as well I received a TEXT message with that amount. He tried to explain there were "Tower Issues" in my area ???? and gave me another number to call to get to Billing services quicker! The girl reviewed my account and confirmed everything- (should have been lower payment, could not upgrade to $60 level alone with email confirming new price) Here is where the throttling question came in. On my account page My data Usage showed a little over 3g data used but indicated "NO Throttle" although I got the text and reduced speed warning and indeed was throttled down to 125K.... SHE even tried to tell me there were TOWER issues in my area! WTF (As though I WAS NOT supposed to be Throttled even Though I has passed THE Limit!!!)

It was as if the customer service reps had NO Idea what FEATURES and services were available for the account. BTW They both "Chimed" in on OTHER problems that had been raised by other customer complaints!

My issue is with background programs that were eating up my date ie Google Auto backup (its turned off now learned hard way)

Sorry for the long POST but I found it very interesting that BOTH reps kept talking about TOWER issues......apparently it is due to SLOW 4g speeds!

I have switched to CMDA only mode and still get about 3meg download speed. Which is pretty good for what I need (I do tether with FULL PDAnet) BTW Boost knows what programs are loaded on the phone!

Care to explain this a little more?

Interesting story by the way.

During the call to Boost customer Service, I wanted to know what programs I could remove that were using data in the background . The rep said "Let's take a look at what programs you have on your phone!" and started listing what was loaded, including SU and PDANet! They did not have an issue with them but suggested "make sure you disconnect AND turn off mobile data after any sessions." to save data allotment.

The confusion on their end was due to there have been a lot of 4g tower issues in the Indianapolis area and they had been getting a lot of complaints about 4g speeds. They thought that was my complaint (lost in translation)

I want to add that I was originally on REVEL "true unlimited" 3g (1-3meg speed) w/ Hotspot for less than $50/month until they were purchased by Sprint...as well as I was a "Clear Wire' beta user (edge of tower range)

Well that's creepy and should be illegal. Almost sounds like the Carrier IQ crap all over again. I think I'll go install another rom now lol. Thanks.
There are a few applications I had found in boost roms that contain this info.. Crazy. If you really want to know how legal it is and maybe start a class action lawsuit read over the terms of service that comes with your device. If you don't see anything permitting their actions, call them up and ask for an explanation from corporate. And be sure to record the calls, they record them
