Moto G Lte - Can 8 gig internal be enough?

I was in the market for a less expensive smart phone. Not into paying a lot for cell phone for limited use. Was going to try the Walmart $30 data plan that has up to 5 gig of data and limits calls to 100. So, I wanted phone for mostly experiencing data. Though the Walmart activation kit comes with a micro sim card and Moto G comes with a Nano. I am told it can be cut down to Nano size to fit phone. Any input on that subject?

But my main question is: With running KitKat, using a SD card for anything other than your music or pictures is not feasible now. Google has now restricted people from writing to the SD card. Being unfamiliar with the size of aps and how many I might eventually want, I am concerned about the size of that 8 gig internal drive, of which only a portion is available for aps.

I want to download GPS maps that will run like GPS when you are not hooked up to your data connection. I am not sure where these maps would be downloaded to. If it were your main internal drive, then that would eat up your available space real quick. If the regions would go to the SD disk, then that would not be so bad.

At any rate, I wanted the phone as now it has Lte, which I would like to have, but unsure of that 8 gb. of internal for all the apps. I'm not into games, but do want to play with a number of apps. If not for the Lte, I would go with the regular G. Any comments from the more experienced on dealing with 8 gig on internal only, with a SD for data only?

I have the regular GSM 8Gb model and it has, in total, 5.52Gb available. However, I have a few pictures and maybe 6 downloaded apps and I'm down to only 500Mb of free storage.
I'm not sure about GPS map apps but I believe you can offload the actual maps to SD but keep the app itself using internal. If Moto does offer a 16GB model, I'd definitely go with that.

Well, I wouldn't hesitate if it had 16. Pictures usually take up only 1.5 to 2 mg. So if you have only about 6 applications downloaded that"s not the culpret unless they are games. But they often only partition the internal drive to accept a small portion like 2 GB for downloaded applications, and And most likely another separate patrician for music and pictures on the drive (data portion). Apps can range from a low of 2 mg to over 34 mg for some big ones. Games can run sometimes 1 GB, so that will totally take up your memory drive.

Do you have games downloaded on yours? A Gig is about 1000 mg, so that should hold at least 40 apps on average if they are not games, if I am right. Music can be a hog too. I whole album can eat up 40 gb. easily. What kind of stuff have you got on yours?

I am new to all of this, but this is what I have picked up lately from reading.

To answer your first question, I believe the Moto G LTE uses a micro SIM card; it is the Moto X that uses a nano SIM.

8 GB should be enough space for most of the apps you want. There are some large apps, though they are mostly games, that use large amounts of storage. To give you some idea, I have over 80 apps on my phone and they take up roughly 3.5 GB of space. If you aren't into games you should be fine (some games can be large, a GB or larger).

As others have stated, you should be able to download maps for a GPS app to the SIM card (though it will depend on the app).

If you use the services the Google offers (Drive) and other cloud services, 8GB should be just fine. If you are more into internal storage instead of Cloud, definitely opt for the higher GB storage.

I don't see this as an issue since it has a MicroSD slot -- most anything you would put in the cloud can be put on the MicroSD card. It is largely only an issue for items that have to be put in internal memory on the phone.

Though, since he brings it up, I assume that Motorola is giving 50GB of space, for two years, on Google drive when you purchase the Moto G LTE?

I just purchased the Moto G LTE and found out the 50GB 2 year offer is only for the 3G w/o the SIM slot.

Bummer! On this LTE version we have a SD slot for up to 32GB SD card. So now that we have root, we can use link2sd to move (link) apps to the SD card. I have link2sd setup to automatically move new apps to the SD card.. very cool! I've never had problems with running out of space.

I pulled the trigger on the 16gb version that DOES not have an additional SIM card slot. 16GB is fine for my needs and yes I do get the 50GB cloud storage option for two years. By then I'll have moved onto another phone. Will I miss the 4G LTE? Well HSPA+ I'm told is pretty fast and I'm able to stream video over it without any buffering so I'm ok with this phone so far. For $199 it's going to be hard to beat a 16GB solution. Currently upgrading to KitKat and I have a few Apps loaded and will see what I have for room after all is said and done.

My vote is for the 16GB version.

Interested in this as my son was waiting for the LTE Moto G to come out and we thought that it would be a choice of 16Gb or 8Gb. It's disappointing that Motorola haven't brought out a 16Gb. He likes to play games so is not sure whether 8 Gb is big enough. Could go for the non-SD 16Gb but he needs the SD card.

Are there any other phones he could consider please?

I bought the 8gb LTE version.

The downside is only 5.5gb is available for storage, and not all apps can be saved to the SD card.

That said I have quite a few apps installed including 3 fairly big games and it's only used 1.5gb of the internal storage, so I'm not worried.

Many of my apps are installed to the SD card along with photos, videos, etc. When I get bored of the phone I'll probably uninstall half of the apps and have even more space.

I've got nearly all the apps I want on mine, and I still have 4GB out of the 5GB available.

I want to download GPS maps that will run like GPS when you are not hooked up to your data connection. I am not sure where these maps would be downloaded to.
I'm using MapFactor Navigator and it allows me to specify where the maps are to be stored.

so the SD card really can only be up to 32gb on this thing eh?

Why even put an SD slot in it if you can't use 64/128?
Because 32GB of additional data storage is better than no additional storage?

I've got "only" a 16GB card in mine, and haven't used but a fraction of it.
