Battery Life Experience

I'm guessing this isn't too bad. The periods where it was awake but the screen was off was from music or some net casts

I had a quick look at this ROM on XDA and it looks really interesting. My last phone was an S3 which was very easy to root. How easy is the M8?

Also with this ROM do gestures such as double tap to wake still work?

Thanks
Everything works great, plus then some! :D

If you're interested in rooting your M8, let's head over to the root forum. Great group of folks in there always willing to help get you sorted. Post up a thread and we'll get you rolling. :)

8 hours screen on, 17 hours total.

Jesus Christ! Teach me!

I think the best ive gotten is just under 6 hours but that was a one off mostly 5ish hours, wifi on. Cant seems to get the 8 hour mark that some people are getting, im assuming mine is app usage. I do a lot of browsing on my phone so mostly refreshing pages and internet intensive apps.

Seem to get much less on LTE but thats expected. Might give the Viper ROM a test run :thumb:

Is that the stock kernel that comes with Viper you are using? I tried that Elemental X kernel but tbh seems no different to the ARHD kernel.

Stock kernel.

Wakelock Detector and Gsam Battery Monitor to let me zero in on (and replace) apps that don't get along.

Oh - and I stopped using auto brightness (something that I used for the last 2 years) because it's very aggressive.

I could adjust the sensors and light output with Viper, but decided that it was easier to just go manual.

The screen is so bright that it's easy to change up and not realize how much brighter it got. Auto brightness was doing that to me.

When I got my phone on June 18th my battery was awesome. I went to a concert the following week and shot many many videos (some full length songs) - I took it off the charger that morning around 7:30 and till by 11 pm that night I would say the battery was still above 50%.

Suddenly 3 nights ago my battery is dying pretty drastically. I take it off the charger at 7:30 in the morning and by 9:00 at night it's nearly dead. I am not a heavy user and it's hooked up to wifi 90% of the day. I haven't added any new apps between the first week and now.

I've checked the battery usage and nothing seems to be out of the ordinary.

I've noticed that the battery isn't what it was when I first started using it. I'd be at 60% or so at the end if the day. Roughly the same usage in at 15 now. About 6:30am to 11 pm or so.

Gsam Battery Monitor and Wakelock Detector can go far too find a misbehaving app, and if you have some sort of radio issue causing things.

Because media is tied to nearly everything, a bad media file can chew through power quickly. Do a full copy of your files, internal and sd card, to your pc. If it hangs on a file, that one is likely corrupt. Remove it, try again. Surprisingly, I've seen this hit people a number of times with music files that have gotten corrupted.

Finally, it's possible to get abnormal power drain by either the hidden Android Dalvik cache being tangled up or even app caches fouled up. For that, Helium Backup your apps and data, factory data reset, and restore.

But definitely start with Gsam and Wakelock Detector.

That is awesome. You are getting about twice what I get on a stock verizon model. How do you keep your app usage so low? Can you snap a shot of your app usage details? Thanks.

I have changed to the paid GSam app now so it has reset. I don't do any gaming on the phone and I have disabled google+ and Google search as I don't use them.

Most of the time on the phone was just messing about with apps, widgets, internet and downloading wallpapers because I have been away from android from a while before getting the M8 last week so just trying to get it right.

I ended up plugging the phone in when it hit 10% and it had over 10 hours of screen on time with WiFi and 4g on all the time.

I restarted my phone since that seemed to help someone previously and it helped A LOT. I honestly can't say if I had restarted the phone in the past 3 weeks since I bought it. Now with my normal use (which isn't much) I was around 75% at 9:00 pm.

Yesterday I used it pretty heavily to plan some games and was at about 40% around 10:00 pm.

guess the system just needs a little refresh once in awhile.

I've noticed the better battery performance after a restart too. Makes me wonder if there is something going on in the OS or with another app on the device. The OS idea is interesting because it seems like those who are running different ROMs are getting better battery life than stock in most cases. Anyway I've stopped watching it and I'm usually around 35% at the end of the night. Sometimes lower.

I use Rdio a lot for music and PocketCasts for netcasts. I see that when I listen to PocketCasts a lot the mediaserver service eats a tons of battery. Up to 30% according to GSam. Rdio, not so much. In my case I'm wondering if there's something weird going on with how the mediaserver Android service is interacting with the PocketCasts app...

App usage only 27%? What do you mostly do on your phone?

During that particular snapshot, the usual - business email and calendar use, texting, forum posting, forum management from my mobile browser, a bit of Netflix (to Chromecast, so my phone is just the browser and remote control) and a few phone calls.

If you choose to manage notifications and location so everything isn't running wastefully all of the time, apps tend to behave rather well.
