Ok some I'm running 4.4.2. right out the box, and I've had this device rooted before but then I found out you can't run the ISIS wallet if the device is rooted, well when I bought the phone the retailer hooked it up with $50 credit one the ISIS so in order to get that I had to unroot it, well in the SuperSU app that comes with rooting the phone there's an option in the app's settings that will remove root and all traces of root, now I used this option in order to use the ISIS app and it worked root checker also said the device was not rooted, so one I used up the credit I used the iroot25 method and it rooted it no problem, a month or so later the at&t update with the knock on code option was mentioned, so I check the update (still rooted) device tells me OTA update fails device shows trace of root (or whatever) so I go into SuperSU settings select the option to remove root and all traces, next day try to update again it fails and continues the next few time throughout the week, so I say forget it and try to reroot my phone using iroot25 again, in recovery it says DAT ROOT at the end like it should root checker says no root, try again with the iroot25b it whatever the next version was same result, just tried again with the latest version of iroot, same result root checker says no root, all root related apps won't run, ota still says traces of root found, any suggestions???

You could root with TowelRoot & AutoRec. Read up on it, and root in about 30 seconds. Done & Done.:p
Ioroot25 is the proper way... But the OP removed root and is trying to root again and it thinks its successful but it isn't... This means either a) the boot partition or b) the /system partition is missing something or corrupt. The best bet is restore factory images and start over.

Don't know what you mean by "proper". It does teach you more about rooting, but it also allows for the possibility of a mistake that you won't know how to recover from. Root is root. Once the objective is met, and you've flashed a rom, then you can read up on how to root in different ways.:p
