Help Download My DVD Movie Collection

I collect movies and have about 750 at the present time. I would like to download a couple at a time to my mounted SD card and watch on trips, etc. When finished watching, would delete and download others.

Is there a way to do this? I have searched this forum in addition to this whole site, other Galaxy Note forums and Google with no definitive answer.

Expected this to be a simple task but seems it may not be possible. If it is not, is there a tablet that will let you do this? One of the reasons I purchased a tablet was to watch my movies....

Uh from where do you wish to download the movie from? Cuz I use my phone to watch movies all the time o_O it's not that hard as you can just set the download location to your external SD card, download a movie and watch it on any player that supports the format. Alternatively you can copy your downloaded movies to your SD card and watch them as well..

Thanks for the reply.

These movies are on DVD's. I need to get them from my actual DVD's to the tablet. They are not downloadable from the net. The Note has no USB slot, only the 30 pin proprietary slot and the micro SD card slot. I have not tried this before and have been unable to find a procedure to do this.

I am hoping there was a reasonably easy way to do this since it would be an ongoing thing over time.

Thanks again for the reply. I have asked several questions on this specific forum since buying this tablet and yours is the first response I have received.

I have done this, using a free dvd 'ripper' program on my laptop. Then I copy the resultant video file to my tablet using a lead to connect to a usb slot on the laptop. The rip program takes a little while but it works.

It's a bit late now but if you're interested ill gather the info tomorrow on the program and lead I use. It's nothing unusual - I'm surprised you've not been given the help before now.

Thanks for the info. Would there be any difference since you are in the UK and I am in the USA? If what you are doing will work here, please let me know how to access that info.

I have purchased quite a few accessories for this tablet including a OTG USB adapter since it requires proprietary cables. Should have everything I need except software.

Thanks again.....

No, I'm sure it's nothing to do with US/UK compatibilities. Should be the same wherever.

OK, I've had to remind myself how I've done this, because it's been a while. Actually it's easier than I thought.

First, I use the lead that came with my GT-N8010 (current version 4.1.2). That's the lead you use to connect the tab to the charging plug. Just unplug it from the charging adapter and use it to connect the tab to a PC USB socket. Mine connects as a "portable device" and I can use Windows Explorer to view the file structure on the tab and can easily transfer files to and from it. (I've never found Kies to work for me, it just locks my XP laptop up).

Next, I use "Any Video Converter" to convert DVDs to mpeg4 files. I believe it will also convert to X264 and xvid but I'm not sure if they're compatible with the Tab. I'm using the free version which you can find here (look for it down the page a bit - they want to sell you the 'paid for' versions of course):

AVC Windows Products - DVD Converter, DVD Burner, Video Converter, Video Editor, YouTube Downloader, NoteBurner Audio Converter, DVD to iPod/Zune/PSP/3GP/Android Converter.

Do watch out for the usual trick that might introduce unwanted toolbars or search engines. I can't remember if this is relevant but best to be warned.

Also, there are many such free versions of DVD converters out there. This is just one I've found that works for me.

Good luck with it. Give me a shout if you choose to use AnyVideoConverter - I might be able to get you running quickly with a bit of help.

Thanks again for your help.

Well, I followed your post exactly. Plugged my N8013 into my PC. It spend some time downloading the files it needed but it is now recognized by my laptop PC. (Windows 8.1 Intel i5 processor, 1tb drive, 6gb RAM).

Then downloaded the free version of AVC. Placed a DVD in the PC drive and started AVC. Selected SGN 10.1 as the model being used. There were 97 individual files found by AVC. It took a while to load them. After that, I hit the convert button and it went over an hour and hung up. Seemed about half way thru. It started bouncing back and forth between two files continuously, not converting either. Stopped the process and cleaned everything up and restarted. The pgm only picked up 14 of the 97 files this time. Tried again and the same thing happened. Never was able to convert the DVD movie.

Any idea what happened? If everything worked properly, does it take the total length of the movie to convert it? This is a slow process if I wanted to do this on a regular basis. Beginning to look like I will have to buy a portable DVD player for trips and leave the tablet home.

I'm a bit confused about what you're doing. I do have avc on my pc but I've not used it to convert a dvd.

First, you say you connected the tab to your pc and 'downloaded the files it needed'. What files? When I connect my tab, I simply use explorer on the pc to 'see' the files on the tab.

Then you seem to have selected 97 files in avc and tried to convert them. I thought you had a collection of dvds you wanted to convert. In which case, I would expect you to insert a dvd in the optical reader of the pc, select the various files, on it, within avc, then convert. i.e. you would convert one dvd at a time. And yes, it will take a while to do each one, but not the 'real' time.

On the connecting to my PC, I am guessing it had to download drivers to recognize the tablet. It did not immediately recognize it. Got a message saying downloading files necessary to read the file. After that I was able to look at the files on the tablet.

The 97 files were what AVC found on the DVD (The movie Jack Reacher) that I inserted in my PC DVD player. I was unable to tell what the files were, ie; which were the actual movie or other files like previews, special features, etc. Many of them showed zero size. They did not show time. I attempted to convert all but as stated earlier it hung up about halfway thru. Tried several times in different ways with negative results. Several times the AVS program stopped with a message saying it stopped but no reason given.

After this failed, I downloaded Handbreak which didn't work either. Never could get it to actually start. Read the Help section which did not address the problem I was having.

Currently have removed both programs.

Thanks for your help. I have no idea how to fix these problems and may give up on the idea. Way more trouble than it is worth at this point.

Ok, sounds like your pc is different to my xp laptop.

I'm sorry I don't have any idea why you are having this problem. I don't have the technical knowledge and it looks like others aren't able to help on this forum either. The only think I'd suggest in finding a forum that deals specifically with media stuff, rather than tabs. Like this one maybe:

VideoHelp - Forum, Guides, Software and DVD lists

Anyway, best of luck with it.

Any video converter FREE doesnt allow you to conver movie-dvd to another format. It only lets you to convert a file To another (not the whole dvd). Only the paid version "ultimate" let you do that. As you said, it shows many files on dvd. If you had a purchased version "ultimate", there would be a simple button to convert the movie-dvd to a single file that can be played with Note 10.1. But it costs 50dollars. You can try it for free, but it lets you only convert 3 minutes. But if you like it, you can buy it. I just tried that, but 50dollars is way too much... im not going to get it.

Im sure, there are free versions too, but many of them are difficult to use or may need couple differend programs to get a wanted result.

If you find any decent one and easy to use, i would like to know that too... i have played with ProjectX, dvdSubEdit etc. And that is not a convient way at all.. but it was free..

Well that explains a lot. Didn't see any explanation of that on the AVC website. Sure wasted a lot of time with it. I agree, $50 is too much to pay.

Thanks for the info. I was worried it was something I was or wasn't doing.

Maybe this one?

How to encode movies to play on your Galaxy Tab 10.1 - CNET

Handbrake seems to be free. It's midnight here, so Im probably going to test that tomorrow... Oh, it also needs ripping at first - it's not either a "one button"-software. But something to start with =)

Saw this video and followed it to the letter. Couldn't get it to work. But probably didn't set it up correctly. May try again after I get more info.

Thanks.

I use DVD Catalyst 4 to rip my wife's DVDs to an external USB hard drive, kept specially for this purpose; ripped when ever she gives me the DVD/DVDs she wants ripped. Ripping takes about 3/4 of the time of the running length of the film.

Then use an SD adaptor to hold the micro SD card from her Tab 2 10.1, in the pc to which the USB drive is connected; then copy across using Windows Explorer. So far she has some 50 films on her 128GB micro Sd card. When card is full she will delete some from card and then use the adaptor method to bring in new films to the card.

Ripping takes about 3/4 of the time of the running length of the film.
