Root [KERNEL] Franco Kernel Discussion (r68)

Ugh... I just read on XDA that it doesn't work with CM based ROMs. Does that mean PA is out?

Yes, technically PA is not compatable with Franco kernel as it's bundled with the ramdisk and it won't change the ZRAM.
Franco kernel is designed for AOSP ROM's and PA is a CM base build, which requires a CAF kernel.

Although there is a method that you can try and might get Franco to run on PA... Take a look here - [DEV] For CM11 users, here's how you can use… | Nexus 5 | XDA Forum

It's worth a shot and many have been successful. If after trying it out and your N5 doesn't boot or gets stuck in a boot-loop, then all you have to do is just reboot into recovery and Dirty Flash your PA ROM and it will replace Franco kernel with the PA kernel and everything with be fine and back to normal.

Unless they recently changed something, PA isn't based on CM. I've been using their ROM and franco kernels for probably 2 months.

(The ROM is also commonly called AOSPA - highlighting their vow to stay with googles vision https://mobile.twitter.com/AOSPA_Official
)

In fact, Franco is (was?) the official kernel Dev of PA

Thanks Rx for the clarification there! I thought I read that the new PA had switched to using CM base and commits, which required a CAF kernel. Good to know thought!!

Edit:
So yes Franco kernel should work on PA just fine!! Lol :)

Thanks guys! I will try the kernel then. Anything I need to know about clock speeds or etc? I haven't tinkered in a while and paid cash for my phone. No insurance and I'm not developer, so I try to hedge my bets.
It gives you the option to over clock all the way to 3.1. Most peoples phones cant handle it, and will reboot.

I don't bother with overclocking though - This phone is plenty fast. ;)

I completely agree with Rxpert83... The N5 is plenty fast as it is... Just remember any of the Settings that you change. Overclocking and underclocking on the N5 can cause random reboots. Simply reseting them back to the default kernel settings with usually take care of the reboot issues.
I find that undervolting at -50 seems to be a good Settings. Undervolting at -75 for me can be hit or miss... On some versions UV at -75 worked great and while on others versions I was experiencing random reboots UV at -75. So as a standard I've just been undervolting at -50.

I have a problem with the franco kernel and wondering if this was specific to my own user error or if it is consistent with everyone's experiences. Only changes: throttled max cpu to 883 and set the hotplug threshold to 0. I checkbox the settings for boot on both. After a reboot, the max CPU setting stays but the hotplug threshold resets itself to 80. Both boxes to set the settings at boot remain still checked.

I really hate the idea of jumping over to xda to post directly so I wanted to run it by you guys first. These are settings recommended straight from franco himself. Anyone experience this as well? Thank you!

First thing I'd try is wipe FKU data and then reboot, and set everything up again.

For those of us on the L developer preview, franco has released two kernels that work with it. R65 and 66 are for the preview, with r63 being the latest kk kernel. The whereabouts of r64 are unknown ;)

Cool... Thanks for the heads up Rxpert! Glad to see Franco is working on kernels for android L.
Curious to know about r64 as well, since I was on r63 I was experiencing heavy battery drain on the last too versions of DU, the official 8.1 release and the previous Test build. Been running Josh's kernel instead and the battery life has been quite the improvement. I might also try out and test the latest ElementalX kernel again and see how that performs.

Nope, hes since incorporated some power saving profiles.

If you bought the app, the new material design is awesome as well

Awesome, giving it a go now :)

I have the beta version of the app, seems like colour profiles don't exist anymore or? It's been so long since I've used it, everything looks so different!

I feel like just flashing the kernel has already improved the colours though, which is one of the main reasons I was interested in flashing it.

The beta version of the app is getting things added back to it little by little. Its not all there yet but for me the material design is worth the loss of functionality. The basic features are there and functional but the more fine grain stuff like color profiles still arent

Franco kernel has just been updated to R69 with some more improvements for android 5.0. Get it while it's still hot boys and girls!
Just installed it and will test it over the next couple of days as the kernel sets in. should be an improvement over R68 as that has been running great for me on 5.0!

Edit:
It might just be me but with Franco R69 the device seems to boot a little bit quicker now than it did on R68.
