Root Headset icon on, can't hear

I have had this M8 for a month or two now and I got the headset icon stuck on the notification bar, cannot hear phone calls and the other person cannot hear me, cannot hear sound from games and cannot hear music, all on the phone speakers.
I cleaned the headphone jack with compressed air, put a Q-tip (with most of the cotton pulled off) in there and spun it around a few times and that didn't fix it. I did a factory reset and before I even configured anything it still showed the headset icon in the tray.

I took it to the Sprint store and the guy said he looked int he port and didn't see any problems and he said since it was rooted and I have no warranty and since I didn't pay for insurance all they could do was charge me $75 and order a new phone.
I called *2 on the phone and asked what they could do and they said since I was rooted they wouldn't do anything so I just hung up the phone.

Any ideas what to do? This, to me, seems like a hardware defect and should be covered by HTC at the least, and I expected Sprint to be able to help with the process. Now that they know I was rooted, should I even bother with unrooting and trying again?

I am following this guide here How to Unroot the HTC One M8 (Complete Guide) (Video) | TheUnlockr and it tells me to download a stock TWRP. I put that stock TWRP in the same folder that has backups in it but the stock rom will not show up in there. I can confirm they are there in Windows, but TWRP will not find them in the on the phone.
Found them, I just put them on the SD card instead, inside of a folder that was already there.
