Scared to go in the water with it

I was at a public pool the other day, 1st day i got my S5 and was about to give it a shot. Saw a guy walking around in the pool with his S5 and dunking it, but he had a case on it.

I approached him and asked if the phone is truly waterproof and should i be worried ... he said this is his second one, the 1st one he took to the pool and the screen began to not respond to touch. So he said they insured him (i didnt ask details about how/who) and he got a new one, and now has a waterproof case on it.

How has everyones experience been with water?

I've dove into the pool a couple times with it. Takes good video under water.

However, since then, I haven't exactly been testings its water resistance anymore. No real need to. But I'm positive if I spill water on it, I'll be fine!

The S5 is NOT water proof.....

dunking it on purpose will cause problems very shortly.

ip67 infers that it will resist some splashing, and maybe a very short dunking at least ONCE.

I would never try it, why purposefully try to kill a $600 phone?

You're going to get people on both sides of the argument on this one. ..

Nothing is waterproof unless It can withstand being in water indefinitely at any depth with any type of treatment and this phone is not waterproof... however it is water resistant tested and guaranteed to work for half an hour in 1 meters depth of water. If for some reason it fails samsung should replace it...

I have seen a video of somebody putting the phone in the pool for an hour and also putting it in a washing machine for bout an hour. And it worked through the pool and all the torture of the washing machine.

Even though I understand this I myself have not taking my phone into the water and I do agree with his last statement, why risk $600 on the phone! I won't! I don't want to go through the warranty process and waiting without a phone

This is false. Look up what the ratings mean. It means the phone can be fully submerged in up to 3 feet of water for thirty minutes. All phones can resist splashes. The reason phones get messed up is because human error. If it goes into water make sure all the seals are good before u put it in water. I personally have used mine in the pool many times without a case with no issues.

listen....just because you CAN do something, get your new S5 wet, walk around towns with a rifle, doesn't mean you SHOULD.....use a little common sense. be safe in knowing that your phone can get a little wet and it wont get ruined....

would you test your wife with a naked stripper alone for a weekend?? I think not....

Im asking this question because i frequent pools and waterparks with my kids.

I dont "NEED" to take photos in/around the water, but since the phone is being pimped as capable, it crossed my mind and i felt it would be nice to do so.

If its a risk, i wont bother. If it costs me an additional $50 for a special case, i wont bother.

But if its confirmed no issue, than i'll take it right in with me and not worry.

As I've mentioned before, I'm a 100% disabled Veteran. Early in the moring before the sun comes up, I try to get in some walking exercise by
ambling around the golf course I live on. Back in the winter I fell into a lake and couldn't get out. (don't ask) I was there for over an hour before someone found me. My son's had me purchase this cell phone (my 1st) so I could at least call for help it being water resistant and all. Personally, I'm not going to fall into the lake to see if it works and just because it works the 1st time possibly even lowers the possibly it will work the 2nd.

This device has earned an IP67 certifcation.

6 meaning its COMPLETELY dust/dirt proof.

7 meaning "protected against water intrusion at 1 meter for 30 minutes".

if you stay within those bounds, youll be fine. This is assuming you are submerging it like a normal person, not using a pressure washer on it, etc.

I tested this earlier this week and it worked great under water. I dipped it a few times during video. The ONLY issue was the speaker seemed to crackle/pop going through the menu and didnt sound right. I blew it out and threw it in my pocket the rest of the night and after a few hours it sounded fine again. Still no issues and still sounds like it did before submersion.

EDIT: the speaker is NOT within the confines of the battery cover gasket FYI. Im assuming that it, itself, has its own waterproofing underneath its grill?

was it fine after it dried out?

Yes the speaker works after you let it dry out for a few hours.
It works underwater too, just gets quiet and crackley...
the speaker is basically an enclosed module with some spring contacts out the back that touch contacts on the motherboard. The water goes on top of the membrane but doesn't get into the phone (you can see the teardown on iFixit if your interested on how it's assembled)

I had no problems washing mine, dropping it in a sink full of water, in the tub, spraying it with the hose, etc. But I put a QI charging card in that must have violated the seal slightly and water did get in when I dropped it in the sink full of water.

It seemed to take pretty well to this... basically everything failed at first so I took the battery out and let it stay off overnight in a bag of rice... The next morning it was booting fine and it passed a self test with no issues so it's pretty well made in any case... Been over a month now, it's working perfectly.

If you have the case properly clipped on, nothing foreign under it, and the USB cover closed you should be safe to get it wet however if something bad does happen good luck proving to Samsung the case was properly closed.

Also as a side note few repair places will touch an S5 because the screen is glued to the back part of the case and it is very difficult to take it apart without breaking the screen. Even my local authorized Samsung repair shop said they had to send it back to Samsung for repair as they don't have the specialized equipment to open it safely.

Personally, I wouldn't risk it myself, not with a $900 mobile phone. If it does leak, it could be your word against Samsung as to what happened to it, and maybe seeking legal advice.

With waterproof watches, the manufacturer guarantees it as waterproof, but only as long as they service it periodically, and replaces the seals or whatever else needs doing, like changing the battery. And if you open it and change the battery yourself, Seiko or Omega or whatever will no longer guarantee it as waterproof.

Thing with the S5, it's the plugs that make it waterproof, and those are going to eventually wear out, especially if you're charging it every day or plugging a headset in regularly.

Worth pointing out.. that pools have all sorts of chemicals in them some of which aren't nice to waterproof seals etc.., that makes them different from plain old water... so I'd be wary about taking 'waterproof' devices into those environments

Yeah I wouldn't put it in a pool..the chlorine could bleach the plastic and make it look bad not to mention the seals.

I got the wireless charger so that port wouldn't have to be opened and closed so much, I agree it can wear out eventually.

If you really want to take it underwater you can get a really cheap dikapak which is basically an extra strong Ziploc bag with several layers of seal and use that when your at the pool..I have done that for years with other cell phones and cameras when i knew they were going to get wet or I wanted underwater pictures. Best part is they are only like twelve bucks.

Also the screen doesn't respond to touch properly if there is water on it..dude might have panicked and overreacted or he could have had a factory defect.. the digitizer is bonded to the screen directly and the screen is bonded to the back case so it's pretty tight...

I was offered that insurance when I got mine I did the math and to keep it the whole term plus the 200 dollar deductible if I ever had to use it would be more expensive than selling my phone for parts and buying a new one.

I took my S5 on a 4 hour trip white water rafting. It is fitted with a factory Samsung flip case which provides the same seal and protection as the stock back. As an extra measure of protection I kept it in a ziplock bag when not in use. Others on the raft were fairly amazed I had my phone but happy to have photos and videos.

At one stop I discovered the bag did not seal properly and my phone was in a bag of water. No problems to report, everything works!

This is really the beauty the water resistance. Taking all precautions for it not to get wet, but if it does, there's that extra level of protection.

Has one used one of these? I sometimes go with my friend and her 2 little boys to the water park and was thinking of getting one as I don't like leaving my phone in my backpack at the chair. My friends husband just fried his smart phone in water. They have a very big property with a pond and he was doing some work by the pond edge with the tractor and it slipped and in he and the tractor went and the phone was in his pocket. He put it in rice but they were due for upgrades so he went and got a new one and next day he tried his phone and it worked. Mary

I don't think when they made the S5 waterproof the intent was to go swimming with it or any intentional soaking of it. I believe the intent was that if you accidently dropped it in the shitter or spilled a liquid on it or left it in the rain briefly it would be protected.

And I believe it is only waterproof to a certain depth.. so i would not test it's ability to continue to work underwater or after a swim.. Just have piece of mind knowing that if your do accidently get it wet, it has a pretty good chance of not being affected by it.

A much better chance than previous models anyway..

NOT WATER RESISTANT...BEWARE AND DO NOT BUY FOR THIS REASON!!!!
My 2 month old S5 just bit the dust my first day of vaca! Had it in my pocket IN A ZIPLOCK BAG and after a few minutes on a jet ski getting splashed I took the phone out of my pocket to take photo and noticed the phone was wet. I dried off with towel, took picture and stowed phone out of harms way. A few minutes later stopped again and took phone out again. Now I noticed condensation in camera lense. Wow, never thought I would see that on this phone! One of the reasons I bought this over LG. 45 minutes later the phone was disassembled and in big bag of rice. 6 hours later got sound out of it but no graphics so I returned to rice overnight. Since then, nothing.
On the phone with Samsung for over an hour and three levels of CS. Nothing...no help whatsoever. If there is pink under the cover they consider it physical damage. Worse, if I agreed to pay $70 for diagnostics, and they determined it was a defect, they would replace phone at no charge. Ridiculously, they would have to "order" a phone from manufacturing division which would take 2-3 weeks! Overall, they would have phone 3-4 weeks for a product that did not remotely live up to their advertising claims. So disappointed in Samsung. Usually great products that they will not stand behind! Very sad. Will never buy another Samsung product.
