I've been searching for a replacement for my 6th gen IPod nano and wanted something that sounds good and most importantly extended battery life. What are my best options?

Samsung Note 3. 26GB of user storage built-in and expandable with an up to 64GB MicroSD card for a total of 90GB of music enjoyment. It plays movies too.

Yeah, if you're not a majorly anal Audiophile, I'd say rather just get a really good smartphone e.g. Galaxy S4, Galaxy Note 3, HTC One or LG G2 and a really good set of Sennheiser headphones e.g. CX300-II, and you're set.

I'd definitely go with spending the cash on earphones - have to say I don't quite understand how one electronic device playing digital music can have better sound than another electronic device playing the same digital music: surely it's all about the earphones 
Unfortunately, I'm not sure that any phone / phablet / tablet could possibly satisfy the "most importantly extended battery life" part of Big4570's requirements .. though personally, the advantage of only having to carry one device way outweighs any issues around battery life. But that's just me

I really like the Sandisk FUZE II's (I had one 2-3 years ago). Good onboard storage space/options/support (the 2011 or 2012 model, for example, had FM Radio Recording) and a microSD slot. I could get nearly a day's worth of listening out of it.

Agreed, go with spending cash on a good set of headphones. V-Moda are great and Sol Republic are as well. Then subscribe to Play Music All Access and you're set. You can stream all the music you want, make radio stations and such, and keep the music you love on your phone to listen to offline. Works pretty smooth.

The old epithet "rubbish in, rubbish out" still applies. That digital source requires conversion to an analogue signal in order to be reproduced by the earphones, so the DAC (digital-to-analogue) conversion stage is fundamentally important to the end result.

Didn't realise that was different between machines: I thought it was simply a function of the decoding.

Nah, its definitely at least partially hardware. There's a very tangible difference between my motherboard and my XiFi, for example.

I just bought a Cowon Z2. This is not a player for the novice as there is an awful lot of fiddling about connectivity-wise
and the thing is really uncooperative.
I am looking forward to getting it to a state to actually listen to some music as i am told the sound is amazing -- which is why i bought it...

I may be responding to an old thread, but whatever. I also find Sol Republic as great quality headphones with my phone as a music player. And in combination with using a custom ROM, kernel and Viper 4 Android (audio mod), the sound quality is hard to beat. One more thing: if you're worried about battery life, you could always get an extended battery.

It depends on how you listen your music, how much you love it and what you use your player for.
Best player I ever had is Sansa Clip. I only use it when I'm on my road bike and I just have a set of song for exercising. I can operate it without looking at it, it runs for at least 12 hours, its tiny and durable. If it breaks I will just get another one for $40.
I recommend you to stick with Apple since you are used to it.
