So I've had my phone for 2 months now, and have recently noticed a yellow spot (more of a line) on the left edge just below the volume rocker. I called LG about this, and they said they can't touch Straight Talk phones. I don't understand why, but they said to do a factory reset (which I'm hesitant to do), and if that didn't work, call Straight Talk to see what they can do, which I know will be nothing, as it's not a Straight Talk phone. Am I just screwed here?? Any help would be Greatly appreciated!!

Assuming you bought it from Google Play, call Google. Work it out with them. They will end up having you ship it to LG if it needs repair or replacement, but they will make the determination. Google is the keeper of the warranty.

I'm not sure where or how it was originally purchased. I bought it used off eBay, and that was from the second owner who only had the phone for a couple weeks. I guess I'll have to contact Google and let them know what's going on, give them my IMEI and see if it was purchased through them originally. **If so, does it matter that I'm not the original owner, and that I don't have any of the original accessories or anything that came with the phone new?** Or maybe I should just lie to LG, tell them it's an AT&T phone (it technically is, through ST, but AT&T is what shows up everywhere on the phone unless you look into my APN Settings), and see if they'll fix it. I'd rather just do an RMA thru Google Play, get a new phone sent to me, Then send them this one, IF that's possible in my situation. Ugh, so frustrating. From everything I've read, this happens pretty frequently. The glue that holds the screen on heats up and crystalizes, leaving a spot or streak of yellow near the edge of the screen. I have OCD, so this is driving me insane, because I can't stop looking at it!!

Yeah, I don't know what trouble the "second hand" thing creates. I'm clueless on why LG would care what carrier/MVNO you are using. Good luck.

Yeah, called Google Play and it wasn't bought from them. So now I guess I'm gonna hafta call LG and lie about it being on Straight Talk. I have no idea why that would matter either. Makes Zero sense to me. I can just tell them it's not activated right now or that it's being used with at&t Go or something. It's an unlocked phone that can be used with Any compatible carrier, and they gave me shit about it being Straight Talk?!? Wtf is ST gonna do about it? They're not a phone manufacturer, least of all This phone! Ugh. Guess I'll give it a try today sometime...and LG's warranty against defects is one year. The phone hasn't even been out for a year. This is annoying me to no end.

First off, I do not recommend lying to anyone. Besides being bad for your karma, it's also fraud to misrepresent product details to claim warranty service. I doubt it would help much, anyway.

Here are some things to consider. When you purchase anything with a warranty, the warranty starts from the date of sale. If you can't remember (or provide a receipt) the manufacturer will usually honor the warranty from the date of manufacture, which they can look up by lot and serial number.

According to the LG User's Manual:

2. The limited warranty extends only to the original purchaser of the product and is not assignable or transferable to any subsequent purchaser/end user.

3. This warranty is good only to the original purchaser of the product during the warranty period as long as it is in the U.S., including Alaska, Hawaii, U.S. Territories and Canada.

So, technically you are not entitled to warranty repair or replacement. That said, manufacturers are not evil greedy b*stards all the time. Give them a call and explain the situation. They might still fix it for you if you are polite and reasonable.

For additional support, contact LG Customer Service at 800-243-0000.

This is how I see the call going ... (After you've pressed 1, 6, 9, waited on hold for 15 minutes of irritating muzak, hung up and called back ... ;) Just kidding ... maybe ... i don't know how good or bad LG's support line is.)

LG: Hello, my name is Bob (in a thick accent), how may I help you.

You: I have a Nexus 5 phone that has developed a defect on the screen. The problem is, I don't have the original receipt.

From here it could go one of two ways ...

First way:

LG: That's okay, if you give me the serial number I can look that up for you.

Second Way ...

LG: I'm sorry, without the receipt we cannot provide warranty support.

In any case, then you'll know.

If you do get further with LG support, I doubt they will have a record of the original purchaser unless it's already been submitted for warranty work, but the date of manufacture could be past a year by now. In any case, it won't hurt to call and then you'll know.

So I just called LG, and they said to send the phone and they'll fix it or send me a refurb!!! He said turnaround time is about 5-7 days, and that's in Texas, and I live in PA.

*I was told to back up my phone and reset it before sending it back. I have "backup" turned on, and the box to reinstall app data with my Google account is checked. So, is it safe for me to do a reset, and be able to get everything back when I get my phone back or get the refurb? I would assume so. Maybe not my pictures, which I'll back up to my computer before I reset it and send it out.*

How bout that? 2 days ago, a woman told me they couldn't do shit cuz the phones on ST, and today, this guy was Super Nice and beyond helpful. And I was completely honest with him too :) So I guess I'll back it up tonight (photos, and anything else that will get erased and not backed up through my google account), then ship it out tomorrow. Gonna suck not having a phone for a week, but hopefully I'll get a nice, purdy new refurb that has no issues. The guy told me that from what I described, they'll prob be sending me a refurb, which he said is basically like a new phone now, as they replace everything on/in their certified refurbished phones. May hafta use an old Tracfone while I'm waiting to get my N5 back, but I have a feeling it'll be well worth it! Thanks for the advice everyone!! Well, everyone who helped me out with this anyway lol. I'll let you know how it goes and what they decide to do once I check online after a day or two!!

Let me be the first to say ...

I told you so! :D

But, yeah, sometimes you just have to get the right person on the right day and just like that your unicorn is farting rainbows again. ;)

On to the technical crap ... I would backup your complete /sdcard folder to a PC. That would cover your photos, some app settings and data that auto backup won't save and any files you think you won't need until you get the phone back and realize you do. Yeah, we've all done that, trust me on this.

When you do a factory reset, it shouldn't touch your personal files so once EVERYTHING is backed up (and verified) then you'll want to format your internal storage too, to wipe all your personal stuff. Once you do that, do another factory reset just to be safe. Then you can send it in.

When you get the new phone and first login to your Google account it should begin "restoring" your apps and settings. What it really does is install the latest version of your apps listed as installed for that device and restore some settings like wifi passwords and sync options. It won't restore your launcher settings so if you can back that up, too or you'll end up setting up your phone from scratch ... almost.

As for the refub issue, I personally think refurbs are as good if not better than a new device. Think about it, a new device goes through minimal QC and may not even get individually tested beyond a random draw from the lot as they come off the line. A refurb is extensively tested to assure it's going to work and as long as there aren't any serious cosmetic issues, it should last just as long as a new phone. I've had to replace a couple of phones under warranty and the refurb replacements never gave me any trouble ... ever.

Good luck and glad you got positive results from LG. (Don't forget to thank them profusely and send donuts!)

Wow, nice story. I would have been the first one to say "they won't help you because you were not the original buyer", but I guess I was wrong. This gives LG some points. And maybe what lunatic said, you were lucky you ended with a nice guy who was having a nice day. I am glad you solved your problem and good luck with your new/refurbished Nexus 5.

I'm wondering if there's a set time frame/limit for me to send my phone in. I hate the thought of going a week without my phone, and Straight Talk won't suspend service on my SIM, so I'm just gonna lose a week of potential use. Guess if I really need it, I'll use an old Tracfone I have laying around, as I've sold all my other smartphones. Now I'm wishing I had held onto my Moto G instead of selling it a couple weeks ago lol. Oh well. It's worth it for basically an entirely new phone that has Much better quality control than a sealed, brand new one from Google. I'm backing everything up today (I've already uploaded all my photos to Drive, so they should be safe there, right?), and probably sending it out tomorrow. I hope I get my nice shiny new refurb within a few days. I know that's the cheaper way for them to go. Then they'll refurb my phone and someone will eventually end up with it, fixed. Has anyone had any experience with replacements/refurbs from LGe with regards to the N5? I've read a few horror stories on various forums when I Googled "Nexus 5 LG refurb replacement." Praying everything goes well!! I'll keep posting updates as often as I can!

Okay. So I just backed up my phone with G Cloud and Sync Droid. I should be good to go now, right? Is there any other (simpler) way to backup Everything? When I plug my phone into my PC, it doesn't show up in the USB drives, with or without USB Debugging enabled. I'm planning to send the phone to LG tomorrow, so I could sure use the help tonight!!!!
