Wow, the Edge is surprisingly cool.

Wow, very interesting.

At first I wasn't sure but after seeing it during the streaming, that's a pretty sweet little feature. Can't wait to see where it goes after developers get hold of it!

I'm a huge Note fan so I'd be hard pressed to skip out on the Note series but, this intrigues me. Anyone else?

I don't know, having seen the hands on videos, it looks kinda pointless.

If this was at the top or bottom of the display, it would look better.

Does the edge bit work independently of the main display? Could I pick the device up and have the edge tell me that I have messages/missed calls etc without having to turn the proper screen on?

Having access to the app shortcuts at any time is potentially a cool idea, but there are apps and even launchers (Appsi, Action Launcher Pro), that give you similar functionality without having a handset which looks kinda lopsided.

Putting a screen protector on would be a freaking nightmare too. :p

I'm hesitant.

On the one hand, it's a kick-tail phone, with THE FUTURE written all over it.

On the other hand, with such "limited distribution", ROM development may be non-existent or very sparse.

As much as I want a Note Edge, I'll really have to see how "limited" distribution is before buying it. Note 4 - one form or another - is definitely on for me... but I want a rooted and ROMmed Note 4. Not a stock, bloated Verizon Note 4 over which I have little control.

:)

What are your thoughts? Will developers support a Verizon Note Edge if it's limited in distribution? Or will they prefer to support the Note 4 because there will be so many more of them?

I'd imagine the EDGE features wouldn't be enough to sway current NOTE3 owners on its own.

The Quick Charge feature is nice though, but, again, even w/the EDGE feature,it's not enough of an upgrade.

Speaking of features, kinda odd that they went back to a USB 2.0 port........

Edge isn't enough for me.

Quick charge is cool, but still not enough.

And yeah, I thought the change back to micro USB 2.0 was a bit odd. Most underrated feature was having usb 3.0.

Edge IS enough for me - I mean, it's a Note 4 with an attitude! But only if ROM development is active. If SBreen doesn't develop Hyperdrive ROM for the Note Edge, I'll go with Note 4 (which I know will have ROM development).

I can see the edge screen being a real asset once devs get hold of it... instead of the pretty gimmick it currently is. I love the cover that shows only the edge screen (for time and messages)...

It all looks very interesting. I can upgrade at any time so I'll certainly consider this. I think that I'll have to try it first though to see if I can get on with it.

Also depends on price and the availability of a decent case and screen protector (can they do a tempered glass screen protector with a curve on one side??).

Yeah, I saw the 64gb internal listed on Phone Arena's spec page, which is what made me think there's an "outside" chance. Part of me feels that, the US providers will cheap out and only bring the 32gb version over. We'll have to see.

Incremental changes seem to be the status quo, hopefully 32GB will become the basement for mid-top level phones, although 64GB for a minimum would be in order,w/cloud services & larger app sizes due to ART lurking ahead.

As for the EDGE function, the more I see,the more I'm drawn to this device (ALREADY,HERE WE GO AGAIN)................. :p

Took a look @ myT-MOBILE account this morning:
They've finally updated the correct balance/devices & have even reinstated the JUMP that I used on the LG G3 I returned in July.Soooooooo, this is looking like a possibility, although I'd prefer an unlocked/carrier-free variant.

What's kinda funny to me also is, I recently discovered that linking my dropbox account (which has about 30gb worth of data stored) caused a lot of my internal storage to be eaten up, when I linked it to my Note 3. So, after I received my warranty replacement from Samsung, I decided that it's probably best that I not link my dropbox account through the phone, and just through the app.

The Edge definitely intrigues me more than the Note 4, simply because of the internal storage. The functionality of that edge...that's still TBD, for me. The concern that Rob had posted is definitely something I'm thinking about and it would probably get on my nerves, if I kept accidentally triggering something because of the edge. I'll have to watch some hands-on videos, to get a better sense of it.

I'm definitely interested, and my upgrade is coming soon. But, for now, this will only work with TouchWiz? That gives me major pause. Hate Samsung's bloatware, so now I'm left wondering, "Will my curiosity for the Edge outweigh my developing loathing of Samsung/TouchWiz?"

Was it confirmed that it would only work with touchwiz? I was hoping that it would function more like an overlay, similar to the multi-window function, so it would still work with 3rd party launchers like nova.

Since the advanced software was given out to developers, I'd love to see a 3rd party launcher like Nova, use that bar for a secondary scrolling dock or something that functionally could open up the homescreen space, while still providing functionality from the 3rd party launcher.

Just saw this. Looks kind of cool, but not really liking it as far as usefulness. It just seems like it would be awkward.
Looking forward to seeing what everyone thinks after they try it out. It just seems like it is more in the way than useful especially because it is on the side.
A little but annoyed they changed the charger again.

I'm very upset about the move back to USB 2. From what I read Samsung claimed not enough people found it useful and didn't see the point of wasting internal space.

On the flip side I think that just shows how stupid people are. Everyone found it useful just solely for the charging speed.
Im definitely upgrading to one of the new Notes but I'm not sure which on yet. I'm leaning towards the Edge but I won't decide to I wold and play with both of them.

I do think they're both a pretty decent upgrade too.

This is definitely a very interesting concept Samsung is going with. BUT (yeah, always a but) not sure how practical it really is.

- awkwardness with holding/manipulating the phone (it's asymmetrical after all)?
- taking calls without activating the side screen (palm rejection)?
- scratch one handed operations?
- protection (cases/screen protectors)?
- greater possibility of screen burn-in on the curved portion of the AMOLED screen (if it's going to be static and not turn off)?

There's a few more questions I was thinking about, but lost my train of thought.

As for USB 3.0, I personally never liked the micro connection. It feels flimsy and delicate to breaking with all my devices if I don't handle them properly (external HDDs, card readers, etc). But that's just me.

Unfortunately, that's the only benefit of having USB 3.0; the internal storage. You also had to select MTP USB 3.0 to see this benefit. The data transfers were excellent there from what I've read and seen. But that's where it stops. You didn't get the same benefit if using it with the SD card in the phone. You are better off switching back to USB 2.0 for that as it made no difference.

Also a common joe who is not tech adept was probably doing a few of these things which probably led to Samsung concluding what it did:
1) using a USB 2 port instead of USB 3.0
2) was mostly adding things to the SD card and not internal
3) not switching to the appropriate MTP USB 3.0 mode

On the flip side I think that just shows how stupid people are. Everyone found it useful just solely for the charging speed.
Or how misinformed they are... Some just don't understand that charging from the computer's USB 3.0 port was the only difference it made. If charged off the mains or a USB 2.0 port, there is no difference between USB 2/3.0.

Personally, I found the USB 3.0 on the Note 3 to be nothing more than another gimmick by Samsung. It was not implemented well or thought through. However, if they added full SDXC UHS support with USB 3.0, then that would be a different story.

This looks like a very nice phone, although I was surprised with some of the decisions that have been made. Going back to USB 2.0 does seem a backward step.

We were lead to believe that the device (including the Note 4) would have 4Gb of RAM, although they are sticking with 3Gb.

They have also stated that it will only take up to a 64Gb Micro SD card. How true this is I don't know as they said that about the Note 3, but I use a 128Gb Micro SD card in mine and it seems fine.

On the whole it does look very impressive and I for one have one on pre-order. I just hope the scheduled October release (according to Phone Arena) is true.

I can see that the edge screen could be very useful and hopefully as the SDK is now available we will start to see better use of tis unique device . I also agree that I would love to see Nova Launcher integrated to use the edge screen.

The more I read about the edge the more I start leaning towards it
Assuming there isn't a drastic price increase I want to jump on this train early, I don't necessarily think this is going to be the design innovation that changes the world but it'll sure be a fun start if developed properly

As for the USB2.0/3.0 thing, I feel like it really sucks to go back after already having experienced the improvement but I get it from a business perspective. It doesn't actually help charge faster unless you are charging from a USB port on a computer and you have to figure a huge majority of smartphone users don't ever plug their phone into a computer.

The vast majority also use Wi-Fi for data transfers over cable.

If only Samsung utilized USB 3.0 better and to its full potential, maybe it would have stuck around. Unfortunately, they turned it more into a gimmick than anything else.
