Help How to set default storage to SD card

The camera is set to store on SD card but I don't think other stuff is going there like when someone sends me a picture message and I save the picture I think it's going to internal storage or when I download a PDF file from the internet. I googled and every site says this but I don't understand where to go. I can find content settings in the chrome browser but nothing there that says default storage. I am on Verizon and I don't see a stock browser on this phone like my LG's had so it just has chrome unless I am missing something. It's probably simply and I am just not seeing what to do. I just want to make sure everything is set to save to the SD card, excluding apps. Mary

Setting the Default Memory Storage to SD for the Internet App:

  1. While on a home screen, tap "Apps"
  2. Tap "Internet"
  3. Press the "Menu" key and tap "Settings"
  4. Under "Advanced", tap "Content settings"
  5. Tap "Default storage" and select "SD card"

Hi

It would seem that the Verizon S5 does not have the "Internet" app, which is Samsungs stock browser, installed by default. I have found an article here

How to Get Back the Stock Android (AOSP) Browser Without Rooting

which is a method of installing it without rooting, but I'm not sure its worth it. I dont know of a way to make Chrome automatically download to the extsdcard.

Well that stinks, you mean if I save a photo from a webpage I have to remember every time to transfer it over to the SD card from the internal storage? What about if someone sends me a picture text or a photo in email? I know about cloud but I like everything saved to SD card when I get it. That seems like something so minor that should be simple to accomplish without jumping through hoops. Mary

I suspect that might be because lately, Google does not really encourage external storage cards. Look at the Nexus devices - no build in external storage.

Not saying it is right, but that's likely the reason why Chrome doesn't provide the option to store to a different location.

Try this out for me though:
  • Download and install ES File explorer (others may work too, but I haven't used those)
  • Open ES file explorer, and go to settings/directory settings/download path - set that to your SD card
  • In settings/apps, clear out the defaults for Chrome app.
  • Try to download something. This time, you should get prompted for "what app to use for download", and you should see ES download manager as an option. Select that, and set that as a default

Does that help?

Ok I use ES on my tablets so know what that is and how to use it. Will try in a bit and post back. It's not just so much when I view a webpage but what about when I get a photo in email or in a text message? Is there no option to set the default on those to the SD card? Sorry but I guess I am confused after having come from 2 different LG phones on T-Mobile the latest being the L90 and you could just set the default storage to the SD card so picture texts and email photos would automatically go to the card.

If you look on the T-Mobile site for this phone there are instructions for storage one being internet so can I assume that on T-Mobile this device comes with a stock browser that will do that and on Verizon it doesn't? If I had gotten that new LG g3 on Verizon would I have been in the same boat with storage? I was debating between the 2 phones and thought I would try something different this time so picked the Samsung. I like it but it's just these storage issues that are annoying me as I guess I thought all phones stored the basic stuff like picture texts and email stuff to the SD card. Mary

I don't know, but I hope you will get a similar prompt. I have a Nexus device, so can't try it out.
Do share your findings :)

Edit: By any chance, are you rooted? If so, there may be options available

I stopped at a Verizon store today and with this phone you can't save directly to the SD card. I explained to her what I wanted to do and she looked at my phone and was confused so had to go do some research and came back and said you have to save it then move it to the SD card which I kind of thought was what she was going to find out so no sense in trying a file manager as I don't think that will make a difference.

That seems like such a simple feature that should be included. I don't care about apps but when I get an email with an attachment or a text with a photo seems silly I have to go through and extra step to get it on the card and think about doing it. I told her on my LG there was a setting to tell it to save to SD card and when she checked she said she wasn't seeing that LG phones could do that either but my L90 could on T-Mobile so maybe it's Verizon that does not allow this? I don't know but I will have to make do and just remember when ever I get sent a photo or document to move it over to the card manually. Mary

You can also purchase a sandisk ultra micro sd card and download the sandisk memory zone app, an you can transfer music, videos, pics, documents, even back up your entire phones content to your SD card with the memory zone app, free from Google play. It's very useful and the card is for android devices, way easier than anything else, it does it all for you!

Thanks, I have a sandisk micro card in the phone, is ultra something different or can I still use the app with my card? Mary

You actually need a SanDisk Ultra Micro SDHC or SDXC card, as the card is specifically made for android devices(phones, tablets ect.) I bought mine @ The Source, A 64 GB on sale for $59 but any size will work, once you have the card installed in your phone, all you need to do is download the free app from the play store, its called SanDisk Memory Zone app, it's great as you can set it up to store all your content to the card or add a single picture and even add online storage services such as DropBox, Box ect. to the card as well, to free internal memory, music, photo's, video's, documents, contacts, emails ect, even back up your entire phones content. I'm in Canada and not sure if you have The Source where you live, but any electronic store should carry the SanDisk Ultra Micro SDHC/SDXC card...Below is the info for the card;

Shoot and save more high-quality photos and Full HD video on your Android smartphone or tablet with SanDisk Ultra microSDHC and microSDXC UHS-I Cards. With storage capacities up to 128 GB, they're the ideal complement for Android smartphones and tablets, giving you the freedom to shoot and save what you want without having to choose what to delete. And the SanDisk Memory Zone app, available on the Google Play™ store, makes it easy to view, access, and back up all of your files from your phone’s memory in one convenient place. To help your smartphone run at its peak performance, this app can be set to automatically off-load files from your smartphone’s internal memory to your memory card.**

Add up to 128GB** to your Android tablet or smartphone
Read speeds up to 30MB/s** for quick file transfer
Class 10 performance for recording Full HD video**
Waterproof, temperature-proof, X-ray-proof, magnet-proof, shockproof**
SD™ adapter included for compatibility with digital cameras

I wouldn't buy one from ebay as there is lots of fakes, from Sandisks web site (below) there's inks where to buy... also the 2nd link is a youtube video showing the card and app;

To be honest, I don't think it will matter (unless the app somehow has restrictions on what type of card it will work with).

I haven't used the app, but you should be able to install it and see if it does the trick (with your existing card). If it doesn't work, and tells you that it needs that specific type of card, then you can consider buying the other card. But no sense in spending that extra money when the card you have works fine.

I'd also like to see if your regular Sandisk card will work with the zone app from the play store, but your card will not have all the features as the ultra does, it comes in all sizes (128, 64, 32, 16, 8 GB) so your not breaking your bank to purchase one, and it states it's specifically made for the sandisk zone app, please let me know if your able to use the zone app with your regular card. I'm curious. but I opted for a 64 GB model as it was on sale for $59, regular $130
And with the ultra card it has more features, like Waterproof, temperature-proof, X-ray-proof, magnet-proof, shockproof, so it goes hand in hand with the S5 being water proof as well...

Thanks sounds exactly what I need . Mary

Your Welcome! The other posts (methods) do work as well, but why bother with all the hassle, when the Sandisk ultra micro sd card an zone app does it all for you or you can choose what to move from internal memory to external memory with the zone app, I love it!

Ok the app doesn't say you need the special card so going to try it when I get a chance. It seems you move stuff to the SD card same as I have to do now but it sounds like you can see all the files in one shot so that sounds like a nice idea. If I find I need the better card will order one as that card looks nice so this might be a good system for my new tablet also. Mary

I opted for the Sandisk Ultra 64 GB because it was on sale for dirt cheap and it says it "Shoot's and save more high-quality photos and Full HD video on your Android smartphone or tablet" and you can manually set the app up to move photo's, videos, ect to the sd card weekly, or one by one or all files in one shot with a feature called "Optimem" is which I think is really nice. That is why I got this card, the other options is to much hassle. If I were you, I'd get the card as it has more features than the regular one as it's specifically made for android devices! Cheers!

I can move and copy to the SD card now without this app. Does this app automatically save to the card when I download a photo or document or do I still have to move it to the card? If I still have to move it to the card then what's the sense? I wish there was a way to back up my settings and all like my LG phone had. Mary

yes you can, save pictures, videos, docs automatically, you can set it up weekly to do it for you

or when ever I take a picture or video, I have it set up to save to my 50 GB space of dropbox online storage, which is also on my sandisk utra

with the card, you can add online service storage like dropbox for example to the card, and when ever I snap a picture it automatically goes to dropbox on my card and I also have my dropbox synced to my PC as well, so when ever i take a pic or shoot a video or save a doc, it uploads wirelessly to my PC as well.

I have dropbox installed on my card and it uploads content automatically to my card and my pc

OK so you have to add an online storage place to do that though right? It doesn't save right to the card without having dropbox or some such? I have used drop box and like it so that would work. Honestly though it was much easier with my LG. I just ticked a setting that said store everything on the card and that's where all my photos and documents went. When I need the files on my computer I would just send them over through Bluetooth. Mary

I've been doing some reading and found that since the KitKat update, apps are no longer allowed to save files to any folders on the external storage other than that apps private directory. (supposedly a security fix)

For example, if you install a 3rd party camera app...the only place you can save your pictures is to the camera apps private folder. If you uninstall the app, you lose all your pictures.

Not sure if I have all that completely accurate, but what i understand is that having an SD card is far less useful since the kitkat update.

Has anyone heard anything about Android L reverting this change?
