Hangouts Google Voice Integration

I have merged Hangouts with Google Voice. However, there doesn't seem to be a way to send texts from my Google Voice number in Hangouts. I can switch the number/Hangouts option for the person that I'm sending to as I always could but there isn't a way to choose my Google Voice number vs my cell phone number. Has anyone else figured this one out? My carrier is Verizon.

Hi Cincybearcatfan :)

I'm still waiting for the integration prompt to reach me, so I can't speak from experience. From what I've seen around the web, though, there should be an option under Hangouts > Settings > SMS > "Number to Send Texts From" (or something to that effect). I *think* it would be located between "Blocked Numbers" and the "Notifications" options.

If you don't see that, it could be that you merged SMS into Hangouts but are still waiting for that GV integration to happen (like me).

Let me know :)

I don't see that option but I did get the prompt to merge them so I did.

Here's what I found out. I asked my son to text my GV number, it showed up in his thread in Hangouts. When I replied to that number, it came from my GV number. Then I asked him to text my cell number and when I replied it came from my cell number. He can decide which number to text, both come to the same thread in my Hangouts app but I have zero control over which number that I reply to him with. It's really up to the person texting me as to which number that I text from.

Leave it to Google to make this as hard as it an possibly be! I LOVE the fact that everything is now in one place. I don't send a lot of GV texts per month, in fact it's probably less than 20, but I would like it to be an easier process to send texts. I really don't like having a dead (read useless) Google Voice app on my phone and a dead (read useless) Google Dialer app on my phone.

This is a HUGE step forward. I'm looking forward to an update that better blends all of these things together.

Just downloaded and got this set up, and everything is working great. And yes, having everything in one place is a big plus. The only thing is, since the Hangouts update, I'm getting an error popup (not a toast message) every time I enter Hangouts or a Hangouts message thread:

Unknown issue with Google Play services.
It doesn't seem to affect anything

What I read says it automagically replies using the # the message was sent to. This is all well & good but what if I'm ORIGINATING the conversation? I use my GV # for people I don't want to have my main number. There needs to be a pop-up when you start a new conversation in Hangouts that asks IM, this # for SMS or that # for SMS if you have more than one option fir SMS. They may get to this eventually but knowing how fast Google addresses these sorts of 'feature requests' it'll likely be Q2 2016.

One of the promo screenshots I saw seemed to indicate that you could switch the source number (GV or carrier) the same way we can currently switch between SMS and Hangouts. That doesn't seem to have made the cut for this release, but hopefully it won't be too far behind.

I really hope they hurry along with such an update. That is my only real gripe right now. Well, that and how long it takes for a voicemail to make it's way over (5 minutes on average, really!!). And that is part of/the reason for needing the ability to have a 'chooser' available, all voicemails flip the 'send via' to GV, since that's where it came from.

Right now I've got it set to always send SMS from Verizon and will have to remember to change settings if I want to send from GV. Not thrilled with that but it has to be the way it is for now.

The Unknown issue with Google Play services error is now gone! I was reluctant to confirm my number, since doing so lists you in Google's new directory assistance and CNAM display. On a lark, I uninstalled updates to Google Play services. Instantly, I received a notification that Hangouts required a newer version of Google Play services - Update Y/N? I chose 'yes' to update, but it installed an older version (previously 5.2.08, now 5.0.89). I've gone through all the Google settings, and the only difference I can find is that there is no longer a section for Fitness interface. Maybe they had previously pushed a version intended for Android watches to my Nexus 5? Whatever… problem is fixed and all is well.

Has anyone noticed that they have also integrated Google Voice dialing? All you have to do is download the Hangouts Dialer plugin. After that, you'll have a third swipeable tab in the main screen for placing VoIP calls. If this new integrated package proves to be reliable, it will replace two other apps for me - Heywire and GrooVe IP! :)
