More on the dangers of texting while driving...

I must admit that I am still surprised when I hear stories of people doing this.

How clueless must one be to hear story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story after story...and still engage in this dangerous practice?

Certainly that's a lesson I hope this lady has learned, forwards and...backwards. {ducks}

I pride myself on being an extremely compassionate person. But...I'm human! And sometimes there's this little voice that creeps up and says, "good! they got what they deserved." This is one of those moments. I'm sorry, but anyone who STILL DOESN'T GET how dangerous texting while driving is, well, it's hard to feel sympathetic for them, you know? Instead of being impaled by a pole she hit, she could've KILLED innocent people. As far as I'm concerned, she got off easy. :dontknow:

There are some people who believe accidents are meant for news stories and not their personal life. Don't be surprised to see people still continuing this practice unless something dreadful happens to them or their near ones.

I occasionally look at my phone but not while moving. Only if I made a complete stop at a stop light.

Does that still count as texting while driving?

Yes, it does. You are hoping that the guy coming up on the intersection a 30 MPH that's watching to make sure there are no children running out of their driveway, cars pulling out of alleys, or people trying to pull a quick left turn in front of him that glances up and sees the green light but misses your break lights while you are looking at your phone ignoring the green light doesn't plow into the back of your car.

Oh, didnt think of it like that. It always anoys me when the light is green and people are still looking at their phone.

I always try not to be the one who is on their phone.

Once I was getting lost and my phone would not connect to the GPS. I had to pull over and update my profile and PRL on boost mobile just to get the GPS to work.

They dont update automatically.

I heard a study before that the things that cause the most accidents are actually children fighting in the car. But that was years ago.

Texting while driving is a big trend these days, and quickly becoming one of our country's top killers. So far, police in a number of states have not been able to catch too many people who are texting while driving though most are still likely doing it. To help stop the dangerous practice, the Department of Transportation has granted a $550,000 grant to discover possible ways of catching it.

the thing is... I see cops.. in their patrol cars... driving next to me .. doing over 60mph... texting.

can I get part of that grant.. because I have an idea.
make phones (they all got GPS now) .. take speed samples.
if it is moving faster than 20mph and slower than 150mph and following streets..
then deactivate texting feature.

It can be reactivated .. with entering a security code. (for super emergencies; what ever it might be).. for passengers.

The only way I see it working ... to some extent ... is to make the penalties extremely prohibitive like DUI. At the scene of an accident, phone of the driver gets checked for SMS time stamp. If they refuse (like refusing a breathalyzer) then the cops with proper suspicion and a warrant, gets the records of SMS activity from the carrier.

First offense $500 fine and 90 days suspended license. Second offense, $1000, a year suspension and driver ed classes. Third offense, locked in a room with bjacks and a Louisville slugger. :eek:

Okay, I was only kidding about the driver ed classes.

But how do you refute the claim that the passenger wasn't the one texting using the driver's phone? I think this boils down to "you can't fix stupid."

Or, you could fingerprint the phone?

Of course if there is a passenger and they see the driver texting, they are just as guilty for not grabbing the phone from their hands and smacking the back of their heads.

I don't text while driving, but I could, even with GPS tuned off... so I guess your idea requires that GPS be on before texting anytime, then following your speed requirements?

i have truly tried to get better at not texting or using my phone while driving. I feel that I have. Mainly because I work on a military installation and if you get caught it could be bad news for your employment.

I do think it is dangerous, but then the other side of me wonders what the difference in danger is if someone is smoking in their car and a hot ash falls on the floor and they are distracted at trying to find where it went, or if someone is eating a cheeseburger and a pickle falls in their lap and they are distracted by it..or if they are drinking coffee and spill some on their leg and are distracted by it...

either way I have tried to cut back and intend to keep doing so. fwiw....lol i don't and have never drank a cup of coffee in my life, nor have I ever smoked....and I typically don't eat in my car ....

I don't believe that I've ever sent a text message whilst driving. I have been guilty of changing the music via my phone(my old car had an aux-in jack), but gave that up.

I would talk on the phone fairly often, but now that I have a newer car, I use bluetooth for that, as well as for changing songs.

Even in my new car I can push a button on my steering wheel and it will read my text messages to me. I don't touch my phone when I'm driving so I can avoid the idiots weaving all over the place that are updating their fakebook status.
