As with any guidance provided you assume all risk using the information. You always run the risk of bricking your phone. All information provided by myself and the below forum members is given as guidance only.

The following guidance will assist you with updating and/or rooting your VM Optimus F3.

To check your current software version select System settings > About phone > Software information > look at software version (ex. LS720ZV8 is v8)

This post provides information that will assist with updating form software LS720V7 > LS720V8.

If phone is soft-bricked then select this link to go to the VM unbrick post.

The unbrick post provides download links for VM software versions 5, 6, 7, and soon 8

NOTE:
If your phone is currently not rooted then be patient and you will receive a prompt to accept the Over-The-Air update. Follow prompt and phone should reboot and install the OTA update without issue.

If you have rooted your phone but have not installed a custom recovery such as cwm touch, or twrp, install the update.
* Un-root your phone first through SuperSu app
SuperSU:
Select >SETTINGS >Full unroot

If you have rooted your phone, and have installed a custom recovery such as CWM Touch, or TWRP and have not modified stock system files such as installing a theme that uses modified system files:

Running the update with CWM Touch installed will cause a soft brick.
Running the update with TWRP however will not cause a soft brick.

Install TWRP, and then run the update. (You don't need to boot into it. running the update will do that for you)
* Un-root your phone through SuperSu app after you have installed TWRP but before you run the update.
SuperSU:
Select >SETTINGS >Full unroot

Once the update completes, your recovery will revert back to the stock recovery.

If you have modified system files, you will need to choose to not update, or run the unbrick guide to reset your phone. You can also install one of the stock roms to reset the system files. There will be no modified update posted.

Note: if you have link2sd installed, running the update should not affect it.
if you have [MOD]App2External_SD installed, running the update should not affect it.

i have cwm touch installed... not running any themes though...

what's the difference between a soft brick and a regular brick? either way sounds like something i don't want to deal with...

is there a way to disable the update? or is ignoring it or trying to work around the soft brick the only options i have?

thanks.

edit: saw in another post where you said no way to disable notification yet.

part of my problem is while i'm not a newbie... and i've flashed plenty of roms and installed custom recovery on several phones... i use a mac and it's very difficult to unbrick stuff with a mac since most of the scripts and other files are for windows. i'm not a power user or very good with the line command stuff... i get nervous anytime i have to open a terminal window and start messing around with stuff...

now i'm wishing i had never installed cwm. i'm not using any custom roms or anything the only reason i even put it on there was out of habit from rooting the phone in the first place.

can i uninstall cwm and then unroot... install update and reroot? will towelroot even work with v8?

the more i think about what to do the more confused i get . frustrating.

1. Go back and re-read the OP.

2. Repeat #1 until you see it. ;)

hmmm. i guess i'm blind.

i have a question though. if i already have cwmt installed can i switch my recovery to twrp? i would think not but i don't know enough about such things which is why i ask.

seems like the only option i have is to either a. brick my phone, find someone with a windows machine so i can unbrick it, or ignore the update notice. which is hard since every 2 minutes it pops up and i have to hit "install later"

or like dude says "time to get a new phone." lol.

Yes, but you mentioned that leaving cwm on while updating will cause a soft brick. So I guess backup with cwm, restore with stock v7 rom, then install twrp, then the update? After all that, attempt root with towelroot? Hmm...

back up with cwm. Afterwards, install twrp and then run the update. Then reinstall cwm when complete so you have access to your backup when you need it.

Your backup won't go anywhere unless you purposefully delete it.

A soft brick is when your phone can't boot into android but can be fixed with running the unbrick tool, installing a rom in a custom recovery, or installing a rom in a fastboot command prompt.

A hard brick is when your phone can't be fixed.

I don't know if towelroot will work with the update, Not to many people have received the update yet and have reported back. If you have received the update and can confirm if towelroot will work (or won't) can you report back?

Yes, just download the zip, extract it and then run the *.bat file just like you would with cwm.

If you wish to switch back to cwm from twrp, just do the same thing with the cwm zip as well.

Someone who is on V8 could help me with this. Please try and run Purple Drake to root. I know its for the G3 but please try it as it works for my L90 and want to try it.
