Root [Virgin Mobile] Awful battery life on rooted S3. Any advice?

Got a new VM Galaxy 3 last week. Rooted without error using the newbie guide. I installed titanium backup and removed a ton of bundle/bloatware. I completely removed the included email app and have disabled picasa sync.

When I unplug my phone from the charger it drops from 100% to 97% within two minutes. With or without Wi-Fi, it doesn't matter. Screen brightness is on minimum and "battery saver" doesn't seem to make a difference. Clearing ram doesn't seem to make a difference...

Does anyone have any suggestions? This is driving me crazy.

I installed the sprint nd8 stock ROM (sprint 4.4.2 KitKat) then ktoonsez kernel and undervolted the CPU a bit and it helped a lot. I wanted just the kernel but to have data working with that kernel you need to be on the sprint nd8 ROM. It looks pretty much identical to the VM KitKat (NDC) stock ROM. I'm getting pretty good battery. By the end of the day i have like %60+ left. I also tried aicp ROM with dkp kernel and undervolted and had great battery life.
Also you might want to turn off that connection optimizer.

I feel like battery is always going to be an issue I feel like for me though it has to do a lot with signal and I'm so over virgins shitty ass signal. I do have an anker battery but I'm constantly on Facebook and instagram and snapchat. What I suggest is using deep sleep battery saver app. It turns your data and WiFi off and on periodically and through intervals.. And for me that's honestly where I would notice my battery not drain as fast and that's after the fact I under volt under clock

It's part of the safety circuit.

Your phone ALWAYS runs off of the battery and never trickle charges - they all do and that's to prevent fires.

Typically, the charge goes to 100% and then stops charging until it hits the turn on point to begin charging again - often around 96% these days.

While on the charger, your battery will cycle, up and down, from the turn on point and 100%.

But in that regime, it typically shows 100%.

Then when you take it off of the charger for a few minutes, it updates and shows you the true charge.

You don't lose 3% in 2 minutes - you simply weren't exactly at 100% to begin with.

They all do this, including most laptops.

A lot of battery myths and juju logic have cropped up because of misunderstanding the safety circuit.

Ah ok, I never knew that!

That explains the immediate drop, but is it normal to lose ~10% battery from playing plants v. zombies 2 for 15 minutes?

That I don't know - but I do know that the combination of Wakelock Detector and GSam Battery Monitor will probably be able to help you zero in on anything funny going on.

How does it play in airplane mode? If better, then it's wasting power on your network.

Awesome.

I'm touchwiz rooted but I am not using a custom rom. When I booted into recovery on my S3 there was no option, that I saw, to wipe the battery stats.

Where were you able to do that, David?

If you go into the battery stats, there should be a trash can or refresh icon on the top right. If you tap on it, it'll erase your battery stats.

One of the only ways I can see clearing battery stats helping would be if you had a battery that was crapping out for awhile and switched to a brand new battery

Clearing cache and such helps me sometimes if I've run the phone and a lot of apps for extended periods of times

The biggest known issue and fix for me is the known issue with the Email app, android 4.4.2 and on have a massive leak in the email app, if you use titanium backup freeze the email app and I'm almost 100% sure you'll see at least some improvement, this leak was fixed but seems to have appeared again, its not just on Roms either, even the official versions suffered from it

For me personally I was losing 50% battery in like 6 hours even with 0 phone use, froze email app, now my phone lasts almost 24 hours even with me playing demanding games, of course if I play the games for extended periods it'll kill it faster but everyone knows or should know that lol

Another problem is Rouge apps as they are referred to, rouge apps are apps that once you open and close them they should freeze till you open them again, except rouge ones will keep going using memory or battery up, Facebook is the biggest one I know of, Facebook will randomly and continuously connect and use battery and memory and data even if you shut the app down, best way to use Facebook on ur mobile would be to use the webpage and just bookmark it

3rd big issue comes from App Killers, worst thing you could ever download on an android, android phones don't run like a windows PC, on your phone when you close an app it actually just freezes the app so you can quickly go right back into it (on most apps anyway) if this "Froze" app is killed in anyway android will simply restart the app in the background

So with an app killer you get what I call the headbutt effect, app killer shuts app down, android restarts it, killer shuts it down, android restarts it, etc. Etc basically just adds non needed work to you device, best thing I found to do if you done with all apps and wish to have them all closed and maintain the best battery is once your done everything simply reboot the device then only apps you open or apps that should run will be taxing the system
