My opinion: don't install Lollipop

OK folks, my recommendation is not to update to the new lollipop software.

You won't be able to turn your phone on silent yet still have a morning alarm turned on... If it's even possible, then it is a journey through 1000 settings.

How stupid is that? The silent mode has no option for alarm whatsoever. The priority mode still doesn't include the alarm clock, but calls and notifications for 1,2,3,4, or 8 hours. No other numbers are included so forget about 5 or 6 or 7 or 9 +. No additional settings.

Your clock becomes automatically pink or lilac or something. What am I, 4 years old?

All the icons look like Duplo toys / children's toys... The design lacks maturity and detail.
And that's just scratching the surface.

Major downgrade.

While I respect your opinion, I disagree with your verdict on Lollipop.

I completed the installation and initial evaluation of it on my spare Nexus 5. From my perspective it's very impressive!

Bug free? No.

Yet that was not my expectation, to the contrary I expected more bugs and annoyances than I've experienced in the first few days I've used it. That's what I bought my spare Nexus 5 for. To be a test mule for any Android projects I wish to undertake. Lollipop is a very substantial Android OS upgrade. One in which reside many terrific new features, a significant speed increase and more.

Moral of the story... only install a major upgrade if you have plenty of experience, patience and realistic expectations.

I like this exciting new version a lot!

My alarm works fine while on silent or those priorities settings thing...

What I don't like is the huge downgrade for the lockscreen. Am I missing something? Why can't the pattern unlock just be visible instead of having to swipe to get it? Where did the music controls go? The notifications look awful. The dashclock widget I had worked much better.

The home buttons and the icons are the only lame complaint that I have. But a few edits to the rom xml code should do the trick.

The version name itself indicates Lollipop:symbolizing children eatable things so obviously you'll see all icons of toys.But apart from this,due to version upgrading, we do feel its not so user friendly until and unless we are used to those option and settings that's it

I'm a big fan the upgrade (I've been running the preview since it launched though)

I don't like not being able to entirely mute my phone though (I don't wan't vibrate on and this was actually possible in the earlier previews!) I solely rely on the LED for my notifications whilst at work.

I've played around with priority mode and it's not what I want. I simply want no notification sound or vibrate.

My alarm has been working ok though in priority and all mode.

Edit: Just been reading up on the issue I have, could well be a bug. Seems the Nexus 9 has a true silent mode (still allowing for LED notifications) and there's a trick to getting it on other devices (set volume on the ringer to 1 and reboot)

The good thing with Android is that you can customize it anyway you want. You can change the icons if you like. And while personally, I really like the additional features that Google added in this release, I do understand that people have their own opinions and are thankfully free to choose what they want.

If you don't want to upgrade to Lollipop, and prefer Kitkat, you can choose to go back to kitkat with the Nexus 5

I think most of the system settings are in their original locations, but some may have moved around a bit.
If you have a specific question about how to do something in Lollipop that you are unable to figure out, but were able to do in Kitkat, ask, and maybe somebody here can help you out with that.

While I disagree with you and do believe that everyone should update as I think it's a huge step forward, I do agree with you on the bolded points.

I don't see why we cannot have a silent mode for Priority and Normal that will still show the LED when we get either priority or all notifications. I think that was something they overengineered by accident, and I hope they backtrack on it.

However, as it says in the settings menu, alarms are always priority, and they will ring in normal or priority mode.

Since I have a job that requires me to be on call 24/7, I like the priority mode because I can tell my device to only go off if I get a call without all the rest of my notifications waking me up.

However, at the same time, when I am at work during the day, I would like a way to turn the phone to silent and still have the notification light blink when I get a notification.

When my phone is locked ,while recieving incoming call I have to unlock the phone again to take take the call .. Cant directly pick up.. The screen it all black the , the phone rings but its pretty difficult on silent mode .. Can anyone help?? I got a naxus 5 with the new android lollipop . before the updrage it worked perfectly fine .. Thanks

I love lollipop. Sure, I could do without some things being themed pink, but thats a pretty tiny complaint.

Lets make sure we keep it respectful though. Criticism is fine, disrespect for others isnt.

Only thing I really don't like so far is the lock screen. I got used to just swiping any way I wanted to unlock. Now, with the extra shortcuts, it opens the phone dialer. Pretty much have to swipe straight up. Wish you could disable the shortcuts.

IMO it's no step forward,sideways at best and some things are a backward step.Having to swipe to get to the unlock screen is total BS,so much so I have now disabled all security,so anyone can use it if they get hold of it.The dialler doesn't work from a simple swipe on the pre lock screen and even if it did,surely anyone picking p your phone has access to it.
I don't really see much difference to the rest of the phone but then again all I wanna do is use the phone,text and a small about of internet stuff. Advertising this update as the biggest in Googles history is a bit of an understatement to me.

Based on the rest of the post I assume you meant overstatement, but it is indeed the largest in googles history by a large amount based on the actual code changes (128,680 commits).

As far as the lockscreen stuff, you may want to look into the smart features. It can disable the pin lockscreen when near wearables, known locations, or your face. Makes using security when you need it simple

I'm probably going back to a 4.4.4 based Cyanogenmod ROM, until they produce a stable 5.0 version.

I like 5.0, but as has been mentioned above, a few bugs, and some features I miss.

I LOVE Lollipop and coming from Dirty Unicorns back to a stock experience after so long on custom I was really not expecting to like it this much. I honestly figured I'd install Lollipop, run it for a day or two, miss all my Dirty Tweaks and go back to DU. Now I'm not even sure I'll go back to DU when they release their Lollipop rom!

I was starting to run into a fair few bugs, fcs and other weird behaviour on DU. Since upgrading to Lollipop I have had one fc. I love the new look, I love the new features, I love Lollipop.

My opinion: Install Lollipop ASAP!

I don't like the sounds of some of the changes I'm reading about. They sound like things that will really annoy me and unnecessary changes to longstanding, tried and tested Android functionality.

Exactly! I would recommend holding off on the lollipop upgrade. Seems like it takes the roundabout to get the simplest of things accomplished?

Make no mistake I really like Android 4.4.4 on my Primary Nexus 5!

But now having Lollipop on my other new Nexus 5, I'm incredibly happy with it.

Oh sure it's a bit buggy and has some annoyances, but that's to be expected with this early version. Give the developers some time and after a bug fix or two, this will be one very fun new OS.

Swipe right is contacts/dialer, left is camera and up is home screen or screen u left off of.

1) Tap a volume button then select "none" - keep in mind this will also silence any alarms. As of right now there is no way to have the phone completely silent with alarms still sounding.

2) The star means that you are in "priority" notification mode. You can go to settings>sound & notifications to select which notifications will sound when you are in priority mode. Alarms are always priority and will sound both in priority and all mode

I'm also not a fan of the power button options. Make that option. Now when you long press power you get one option to turn off. At least they turned on the volume button controls on the lockscreen.

Silent would be nice too.

Is it just my phone that doesn't open the dialler when I swipe to the right ????.Not that I'm bothered at the moment as I've disabled any lock screen security due to the fact I CBA to swipe up just to get to the lock screen pattern option.
