Screen burn in

The deciding factor for me came down to the overall quality of the display. The N6 display is inferior. It's OK at first glance but it isn't even in the same universe as the Note 4 display once you've had a chance to spend some time with it. I'm guessing Motorola's need to cut cost led to the cheap display.

With some images displayed on the N6 you can move the image around and actually see dark spots behind the display. The image moves but the spots don't. It's like you're looking through the display. I'm not paying $700 for that.

My only issue with the Note is the bloat that can't be disabled. Touch wiz is actually decent looking these days.

Look closely, do you still see the buttons??

No, I don't see anything. I tried different screen brightness and colors and I'm not seeing anything. I have been using this a bit more than usual, too since it's a new toy. ;) I certainly hope this doesn't turn into a problem, but I've never seen any screen burn-in with any phone I've ever had.

Wow, it may be a good thing that some of us have been unable (and I am not going after this thing hard core as it is) to even order this thing. Gives some of us a chance to kind of watch things. I have already been through 2 nexus 5s, on my third now. They break so easy :(

Then this screen issue. Also lollipop, well, I have not been so eager to try it either, keep hearing about bugs and such. Though no release is flawless.

Even with the glass back, MY nexus 4 was a rock. The front glass is still pristine after 2 years of hard use and the back only has some very minor surface scratches. I will say that the day before my N6 arrived I dropped the N4 and dented the outer bezel (personally, I think it knew I ordered a new phone and it jumped ;)).

There are some issues with lollipop if you're updating 4 or 5, although flashing the factory image rather than running the update seems to resolve many of the problems. With the N6, if there are any bugs, I haven't found them yet. I guess I'm still in the honeymoon period.

My Nexus 7's have been flawless too, which is the reason I jumped right on this thing. I've never been an early-adopter before, really hoping it doesn't let me down. Your reports are encouraging. :)

We always hear from the few with problems, but rarely hear from the many without.

I got xposed running on most of my devices. I got a pre release lollipop on the (wifi only) nexus 4 for some testing. Apps are, well, they need some help. Buggy, crashes etc. I need some time with it to find a better rom. This poor N4, its like the device that no one wanted, but could not get rid of either. I did use it after my last N5 drop.

The prompt for lollipop has been on my N5 (rooted + xposed) for a few days now, the nag is really starting to annoy me. I don't know if I want to lose gravity box as I like the pie controls a whole lot. But not a total deal breaker. Its the constant updates. Root will be broken (I got superSU pro but I am not sure if it can recover from the update).

Bummer... was hoping screen burn-in would be a worry of the past.

I don't like the on-screen buttons because they still don't remove the bottom bezel completely. So if there's going to be a bottom bezel, at least make use of it with some capacitive buttons.

I also really wanted to like the Nexus 6, but lack of SD card blows, and not having removable battery blows a little too. I have tons of media, photos, videos, on various SD cards that I can pop-in for a road-trip, airplane trip, cruise, etc., where I won't have cloud access. Being off-line but still having my media is priceless. And so is being able to take a ton of photos / videos without having to run out of storage.

The worst of all about not having SD cards though, is we get robbed on the storage prices. While a bump in storage might cost the manufacturers $3-$10, they charge us $50 - $100+ for the incremental increase in storage. And if the phone crashes or locks up and you have to do a full hard reset, say good by to your photos that are stuck on the phone internal storage (who really takes the time to upload all of their photos every single day to the cloud? I don't...for privacy reasons and laziness).

Touchwiz in all reality is not that bad, and offers a lot of cool functionality especially in the Note series. I've had horrible luck with HTC Sense which gave me repeated phone crashes and black screens of death that I could not recover from (lost my on-board photos because of lack of SD card too!!!).

So for me, capacitive buttons + SD card (and to a lesser degree removable battery) are very important. If they fix the screen burn-in the capacitive buttons are irrelevant...

The Nexus 4 was my first phone without an SD card or removable battery. And because I was one of the idiots eager beavers who kept clicking on the store on launch day, I took what was available, which was the 8GB version.

Honestly, I never missed the SD card or the removable battery. I think in the two years the N4 was my daily driver, the battery went dead maybe twice and that was because I was travelling and forgot my charger. I have my photos backed up to the cloud wifi-only and i keep a back-up of the back-up on a personal cloud.

I really don't know what I'm going to do with 32 GB (okay, more like 24 when all is said and done).

Cloud storage. This.

Somewhere on the Internet if you sign up for it you can get 10Tb of cloud storage free.
The only catch is its a Chinese Internet company, but they're a billion dollar company so the risk isn't to high.

Took the N6 back. Got a Note 4. The N6 screen just doesn't compare to this Samsung
I'm thinking perhaps you simply got a bad N6.

A side by side comparison with my Note 4 and Nexus 6 reveals two excellent displays.

These are so close to the same after a very close comprehensive inspection, frankly if I had to choose between them based on only the display I seriously don't know which one I'd choose.

.
After a full year of heavy use the AMOLED display on my Note 3 is as beautiful as day one.

No burn in visible, even when looking very closely under high intensity light using a jewellers loupe.

So far my Note 4 bought on release day, is also just fine.... :)

Whatever makes you feel better.

A martini, a nap on a rainy afternoon and my dog curled up next to me. Those things make me feel better. ;)

I haven't seen a Note 4 side by side with my N6, but when i hold it next to my Note 10.1 (2014) i really don't see a remarkable difference. Now i am not saying your observations have no merit. If your devices are that different, then by all means go with the one you like best.

Love my screen.
Very true.

The display on my Nexus 6 is wonderful.

Today's Nexus is such a great Smartphone, it meets my needs ideally. The feature that I like better than my Samsung phones is the three capacitive buttons.

The nature of my work dictates switching between running apps frequently, as such the previous apps button on my Nexus 5 & 6 models makes it very fast and easy. Having to depress and hold (long press) the mechanical home button on Note models slows one down considerably.

Just one of those small actions that makes a big difference.

Nexus 6... WoooHooo :D

I have only had the N6 since Friday and probably have only accumulated maybe 10 hours of SoT and I keep it at 25% brightness, but I have no perceptible burn-in. I used this app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.neizod.rgbw and see nothing in the status nor nav bars. I wonder if it's due to the lower brightness? For the people who have it, what has your brightness been set to and how many hours of SoT roughly have you had since you got the phone? In fact, maybe I'll make a poll?

FWIW:

32G blue
ordered 10/29 from GPS
~25% brightness
~10 hours SoT
no burnin

It's too bad Moto doesn't use the same screen technology as Samsung. The N6 could have been close to perfect.

Look I know Samsung has it's fans, obviously they are the only real competition to Apple as a stand alone phone manufacturer. But for reals, if you don't like your N6 get rid of it and move on. Personally I think Motorola makes better phones, better hardware, better software, better antennae than Samsung. Every phone I have owned from Moto has been exceptional and every Samsung phone I've owned (there was a dark time back in 2009 & 10) was crapola - every friend that's had one (including the S4 and S5) has been crapola. I cringed when my wife bought the Samsung Galaxy tab 10.1 2014 - admittedly it's been fine for the first few months (whew). Touchwiz is a mess, they add a bunch of software add ons that only a percentage of people want or use. Hardware is cheap, in my experience the reception is suspect, on and on.
/Rant

I am happy it seems the early reports of burn in are isolated. I still don't have one but I am still planning on getting one once I can actually get one locally.

Does anyone have an actual picture or video displaying this burn in that they can share? Seeing is believing... and I'd be interested in seeing how bad and widespread the problem is. If it's a defect and they're willing to replace it at no cost... it's still annoying but not as big of a deal.

I haven't seen anything. No burn on mine after a few days, although it's in the back of my mind and I try to stay conscious of it and flip orientations often if I notice stationary elements on screen.

So far, so good. I wonder if it's just a matter of initial break in and the danger is reduced after all of the pixels get some exercise, if it's even a problem and not just a handful of defective displays. Makes me wonder if it may be beneficial to run one of those burn-in repair apps that cycle through the primary colors for a period of time right off the bat.

It's like old CRTs. I've had some old well-used monitors have no trouble with burning, but have seen new burned screens with only a few months of gaming.
