Back in my day...

...need edit, want edit only real gripe.

Spoken like a true 18-year-old. All kids do these days is want-want-want. Back in the day we couldn't edit anything and had to post on our monochrome text screen BBS using 8k modems ... in 2 feet of snow ... uphill ... BOTH WAYS!

We're working on the edit thing ... ;)

He he! Sometimes (not so) subtle humour works! Even the big boss- Phases is involved now. I think my (mock) tantrum woke him up from some much needed sleep. ;) :)

Seriously, and I'll keep repeating this as to avoid misunderstanding : I applaud, unreservedly all admin and mod efforts at this time.
Nah, I lit up the error board with the Phaser Saturday night about the edit and then again last night - the outages we had last night were a swing at getting the bug fixes in. He's been pushing with little sleep for days.

On second thought, I think you're right - it IS your fault. Rotflmao

The real dividing line is over those of us who knew Lucretia Borgia from homeroom - and either wanted to date her or who commiserated with her about the other boys - and those who have no idea what I'm talking about.

The other is for those who find that hilarious and can't stop wishing they hadn't and want to brag about it at the same time.

:D

And you had to play the same song over and over again, to write down the lyrics.

Movies and photos were in black and white.

One boy would write a note (pencil and paper were involved) and pass it via friends to a girl, letting her know she was admired or loved. The horrific stress whether sometime else than her would be reading the note during its passage. And the waiting for a note back.

I actually bought gas for 19.9 cents/gal. It was about a quarter/gal all the time.

My first internet connection was via Compuserve and a 600 baud dial-up modem. I thought I was haulin' bitrate ass when I upgraded to a US Robotics 1200 unit.

Now I have Google Fiber gigabit internet. Like going from an oxcart to a Ferrari.

I'm not old, I'm 18 with a few decades of experience.:D

We had the fire whistle in town. You knew by how many blares and long short (think simple morse code) whether it was a structural fire, brush fire, etc. The whistle also went off at noon and five everyday. It's how we knew to go home for both lunch and dinner.

And you had to shove the handset from your phone into the acoustic coupler for the dial-up! Those were the days.

Rotary dial phones with party lines. Telephone numbers that had exchange names in them. My phone number when I was a kid was Twinbrook 26133 (TW2-6133) (892-6133). Carbon paper for making an original and 3 copies on your typewriter. Getting paddled at school for misbehaving. Riding my bike to deliver newspapers after school. Buying gasoline for $.29 a gallon. How did I get to be so old?

Sadie Hawkins dances in the high school gym. Knees that didn't ache all the time. Getting your tonsils removed. Vietnam. Stopping to pick up a penny on the sidewalk. Knowing the names of your neighbors. Entertaining yourself without television or video games. Never saying "Mom, I'm bored".

I think the most unique thing from back in my day was the all for one and one for all attitude of the neighborhood. Everyone united to help his fellow man. Be it an auto repair or a new roof or whatever... it was a neighborhood project. The women often collaborated with meals and we all shared their efforts. I had a closer relationship with my neighbors than many of my distant relatives. We were close and shared all happiness and sorrow as a tight group.

Every adult had the authority to correct your wrong doings but they were also there to dust you off when you fell and mend your cuts and bruises. They passed along sage advice and helped educate each of us kids with hands on experience. Helping out and learning in the process often involved hot cookies.

The older kids looked after the little kids and there was never any fear of an evil world lurking beyond one's doorstep. Toys were something you made out of old stuff. Without an imagination, all one had to play with was junk and a stick. Nobody envied another.. nobody had anything. We all looked forward to growing up and enjoying all of the opportunities our perfect world presented.

I well remember the fifteen cent burgers and gasoline and the nickle soda... but hey, it was too darn expensive back then. Some things don't change.

Making pretend ice cream with an upside down tricycle and a stick - great junk toy right there. :)

If I had a dollar for every used up d-cell battery I hurled as a hand grenade I'd be a rich man. I've walked a hundred miles on top of a 55 gallon drum on it's side. My trampoline was a used tractor inner tube with a million patches. Every boy had a good stick. It was a gun or a staff or a spear depending on what battle we were currently engaged in. We would fight the bad guys and naturally get wounded now and then and let the girls fix us up. We often played a game we called shinny on your own side. A crushed up bean can was our ball and our sticks moved it from end line to end line until someone scored. More often than not, someone's stick would find your shin instead of the can. Hot summer days would find us swimming in the creek. I was amazed the first time I was in an actual pool and could see my feet under water... and swim wear was required. Some trees are just perfect to climb. Running a race while rolling a used auto tire should be an Olympic sport. Every kid should be required to make a kite out of newspaper, sticks, wheat paste, and string. ....and, stealing a watermelon is not actually against the law if you eat it fast enough.
