Root [Virgin Mobile/Sprint] The new LG Tribute is nearly identical to the Optimus F3

I just ordered one last night from VM, after attempting to rescue my F3 from boot loop hell. My F3 seems to have been stricken with read only mode in most partitions. Even the SD card got stuck in read only mode, no kidding! Never had that happen before on any of my devices that use SD cards! :(

Should have mine early next week. Looks like a really good phone based on most reviews I've seen/read online.

As far as a kitkat port using the Tribute as a base... keep in mind that the Tribute has a more powerful quad core processor. Not exactly like the F3, maybe the screen but that's about it. Some reviewers have compared the phone to the Google Nexus line. That's saying a lot! :)

Edit: OK it does have the same GPU. I stand corrected on that. The Tribute also runs on Sprint's Spark 4G, which means faster than normal speeds. I live in an area that has it, yay!

So do you plan on trying to root it? I'm just curius what would happen if you made a nandroid backup and uploaded it and then someone would try and install it on an Optimus F3 so the f3 would have kit kat. Maybe a dev could answer if that would even work.

It's not so simple.

There are hardware differences between the F3 and the Tribute, beginning with the quad core CPU. That alone would make it difficult, if not impossible to simply use software parts from the Tribute and then try to run it on the F3 outright. Any dev attempting this would have to look at how the stock F3 software works, and then design a Kit Kat port based on that. A lot of testing would be involved, perhaps between willing folks who don't mind the possibility of bricking their F3's.

In my limited time, I have managed to at least look into whether anything could possibly be used to root the Tribute. None of the newest exploits for LG devices work on this yet. I personally wouldn't mind if I didn't root this phone at all, because it works so well out of the box. At this point, if I wanted to install more programs, I'd save my money for a higher end phone with a ton of memory and be done with it.

Rooting is great, but it eats a lot of time that some of us could use for other things in life.

I like this phone as well and agree with your statements, but it still would be nice to have a root method. Like you I have not found anything currently that even appears to try and work.

I'd love it if this phone gets a working root method, definitely. It would be also great to have a CWM or TWRP type recovery to work on this phone, with or without a custom ROM. I'd be OK with at least using Titanium. I did that with my Kyocera Event, which never had a recovery or custom ROM dev'd for it. That phone's bootloader is locked down hard, complete with security checks! I hope that's not the case with the Tribute.

I also hope the phone goes on sale... wouldn't be surprised to see this model as a Black Friday special. If that happens, I may order one online for rooting... I don't feel like going to a store the day after Thanksgiving! :p

Just got the phone case I ordered from amazon, and had time to place a quick review on their site with photos (read it here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2W93G6XUUVVZ5/ref=cm_cr_pr_viewpnt#R2W93G6XUUVVZ5 ). I love it. Never had one like it before! Now I need to put on the Skinomi screen protector I ordered with the case... :)
