Anyone get a ota system update in the last few days? I got a notification today telling me "System Update Downloaded". Sure enough I found the file /cache/3c1bb8df7641587b7683f28393c2ff74d7e7ff91.USER_L710_SPT_NDC_to_NJ3_Update_FWD1.zip. I'm stock 4.4.2 rooted with Philz/SuperSU. Does anyone know anything about this ota? I doubt I want it if there is a way around taking the ota. Any help will be greatly appreciated!

I'm not going to take the ota until I can find out more about it. I'll just let the ota zip stay in cache, like a cancer, until then. I know deleting it won't help. I don't know how to modify the build.prop to trick the sys into thinking it has already been installed. I searched google and xda but haven't found any info yet.

Mydian has a thread if you look way down on how to stop updates. You just have to use the new info in place of what he has used in the thread.

Thanks for the advice. I will continue to search for info about this update. As far as I can tell no one else is reporting the ota. My wife's s3, which I rooted the same, has not even gotten an update notification! I moved the update zip to my network drive, deleted it from my phone's /cache and then got rid of the persistent notification by selecting "Install" from the notification dropdown (with file deleted) then selected to cancel the installation.

Weird. I wonder why no one else has gotten it yet?

EDIT:

I just saw a thread in the Virgin Mobile section where someone got the update. I have to admit, I'm getting stoked. I hope it improves the reception. NDC was a flop in that department. There wasn't a big loss of reception with NDC but it doesn't take much when you live in a low signal area.

Just thought I would leave this here since we need the TAR.

In case you need a refresher

Here's a quick guide on how to snag the OTA tarball from Kies before it flashes itself to your phone. I haven't heard of anyone officially getting it yet, but I'm sure it'll be here soon. Timing is everything, so make sure you're quick before the file deletes itself!
1. Click on Start->Run, enter %temp% and press ENTER. First thing before you go into Kies, clear this folder out.
2. Keep that explorer window open and handy. I also suggest open another to where you want to copy it to(create new folder on desktop and keep it open).
Open Kies, let it download. As soon as it starts flashing, look for a folder with the tarball or search for .tar.md5 in the %temp% folder you have open. Copy/paste it to your new folder. Done. Congrats, you’ve just captured the tar ball from Kies.

The update is showing up on the Samsung open source page. It looks like NJ2 is Sprint and NJ3 is for the original Boost/Virgin S3. There is also a NF4 is for the triband, although I'm not sure which carriers and that build # seems older so I could be wrong on that. I still can't find anything about what the update changes.

Thanks for the info bro. If it's out then it shouldn't be long before we have a flashable zip. Either that or we'll have to Odin the update and do it like we did when the last update came out. I didn't even wait on the Boost version. I went ahead and Odined the ND8 bootloader LOL! :D

I know it's early and it has just been released but I'm curious if anyone with the knowledge to actually look at the update and see what is being changing has done so yet. Hopefully it won't be as bad since they went ahead and Knoxed us up with 4.4.2.

Be nice to know what big changes Sammy has dealt us this go round.

Thanks,
Biker

Yeah, we could remove the assert props and make a recovery flashable zip out of it. But to be honest alot of the S3 users seem to be wary of updates. Some haven't even updated to NDC, lol

No doubt. I'm surprised how many actually haven't updated to 4.4.2 yet. It's definitely gonna be interesting to see what's up with this new update. :)

They sure are taking their sweet time with it. I wonder what the deal is.

I'm curious too. Maybe they're releasing it a little at a time to see if people start reporting bugs. That way they can correct the issues before everyone gets it.

I sure would love to see an improvement in signal strength this go round.

I talked with Boost the other day. My tower is supposed to be upgraded between Feb and March. I'm definitely looking forward to it because my signal fluctuates drastically. A strong radio signal would be outstanding. Also, the town 15 minutes down the road already has 4g. The speeds are slow right now but they'll get it dialed in. I use my home WiFi 99% of the time but it sure would be nice to have 4g when there's a cable outage.

So what is going on with this? Has anyone pulled the asserts and tried to flash this yet? I've been trying to get rid of it on my wife's phone since we can't install it with philztouch anyway, but waiting on a flashable zip or a tar file since when I looked at the zip I didn't know what exactly to remove to make it flashable myself. At 97MB give or take it's obviously not just a modem update...

I got a notification last night. I was confused because I had turned off the notifications for the updates last year. I thought that it might have been an old update trying to push through but apparently not. I still havent updated from 4.1.2 because I didnt like the change in reception. I'm curious to see what they are trying to push on us now...

4.1.2? You realize how many security improvements alone have been made since jellybean? Especially 4.1.2. It was full of holes. Not to mention memory management improvements.
