Android 2.x on Galaxy

ow btw, 2.1 has been ported to G1 (!!), which is considered inferior, hardware-wise, to the galaxy. Still runs everything smoothly (smoother than stock 1.5, or 1.6 for that matter on galaxy) and includes all the 2.1 trickery, such as 3d gallery and live wallpapers. Even supports multitouch out of the box, which is not due to the mt hack on the G1 but from the 2.1 API... I seriously don't see why galaxy can't have all this!

we didnt have the 29 sources before but now we do
g1 has had 1.6 for a while so it already had the 29 sources so it could be built properly

nultitouch is a different thing tho, samsung are using a different chip and screen manufacturer called melfas where as most screens from htc are standardised so its likely cyanogen took the hack that the hero used for multitouch, modified it and applied it to the g1

Yeah I have been following the news here, and read about the various limitations. What I meant to say is, samsung saying the phone is too limited for a proper version of 2.1 to work on it, the G1 proves that this all just a bunch of BS. I have high faith in GAOSP and actually like my Galaxy, even with all its limitations. I am personally thinking that samsung doesnt want to upgrade to 2.1 cause it wants to put its custom skin over it, like on spica. I'm sure they tested the spica version on the galaxy and came to the conclusion it wont work. As I read from various sources, 2.1 is that much more intensive on the RAM then 1.5 or 1.6 so I am just surprised samsung just doesn't release a stock version on galaxy. Or at least give us the option with the side note to stick with 1.5 or 1.6 if you feel that 2.1 might be too slow for your taste. With all the arguments flying around about samsung not being that bad compared to HTC in terms of releasing sources and whatnot, I still think that what I've paid for my phone constitutes a little extra on service. The mod in the G1 shows it is definately possible. If an amateur, with all due respect, with limited time manages to pull this off, a dedicated team at samsung that gets paid to do stuff like this shouldnt have the hardest time to pull one off. Just my eu 0.02

to be fair samsung havent said anything, its just the rumourm mill. the sme rumour mill that said we were not getting 1.6.
while we know it can run on the hardware g1's 2.1 is a mod aswell and not official so lets try asnd keep things in perspective

To be honest it is in Samsung's best interest to NOT put 2.1 on this phone. Samsung is in the business of selling phones!

Despite what a web poll may say you know many Galaxy i7500 users will be buying that new phone as soon as it comes out. The i7500 is Samsung's first Android phone and already over a year old and in smart phone life that is very old indeed.

Well, from what I've been reading (correct me if I am wrong) the rumour about 2.1 is slightly more persistent then it was with 1.6. Nevertheless I know HTC doesnt put out an upgrade to the G1, but in their defence, the phone was the first capable android and has been running the first released version from the start. It has seen more updates than galaxy did. Also considering the age of the galaxy I am surprised Samsung is holding off on upgrading (IF rumours are true). From the same rumours that say Samsung isn't they say that the reasoning is the limited hardware preventing an upgrade. What I am trying to say here is that this argument is not valid, when taking the G1 running 2.1 as a benchmark.

it recieved more updates as it was the 1st google phone, its also been out 2 years almost.
the galaxy is a year old, its quite likely from a manafactures point of veiw that they might think of dropping support for it.
its the carriers that make the contracts not samsung and some carriers have already stopped selling it and referrencing it on the website.
Galaxy was a bad egg and for me a bad purchase but i still found some little gems from it and made my feeling of being skanked alot more tollerable and better tasting

From my reading of what is contained in the 1.6 source release, there will not be a 2.1 update of the Galaxy from Samsung.

True Snazzy but while the phone is a year old.....how long hast it been available in Canada? 4 months. How many other countries has it only be available for a short while?

I realize this isn't Samsungs fault but neither is it ours.

Well the Hero is meant to be officially updated on Friday. I reckon the day will come when the Galaxy is the ONLY Android phone not running 2.1... I think our only chance is if Froyo splits out apps from the core and enables a sleeker OS to be installed. Samsung don't care, but I'm sure Google want to have everyone on the latest version of the OS.
