Help Taking Ownership of Contract Phone

I have a friend who is under contract and paying a monthly fee for phone. I'm not a Verizon customer, so I'm not sure how that works, so I hope you know what I'm talking about. He pays a monthly fee instead of a flat price on the phone.

Anyway, he is wanting to get rid of the line that phone is on and sell the phone. I'd like to buy the phone. He can't end service yet. He doesn't have the money, which is partly why he's selling the phone, and I'd like to buy it.

If the phone shows an active status, can someone else put their verizon sim card in it and it be their phone now without anything else? Not sure how to proceed and not sure I want to get wrapped up in it. If I have to root the phone, that's fine, too.

~~EDIT~~ I ran the esn on two different checker sites, and both came back clear and ready for activation.

If the line is terminated and he doesn't pay any/all/the ETF and doesn't pay any phone balance in full Verizon will blacklist the phone. It won't be able to be activated (or, will be cut off if you happen to activate it before they catch on).

Are you planning on starting coverage with Verizon or using the phone with someone else?

I'm a 20 year Verizon customer and can tell you that if he does NOT pay the TF (Termination Fee) for the phone, that it will not be released for reassignment to any other carrier.

The Termination Fee can vary all over the place, it depends on how he contracted for the service.
ie, recently Verizon was offering the Galaxy S5 for 99 Cents, yes $0.99 and you would pay for the phone over a period of 24 months. In that case, the TF is quite high nearly the full Retail Price of the phone. It depends on how many months the phone has been in service. In the last few months, the TF rate does not even begin to reduce until the phone has been in service for 11 months, on the $0.99 phones, it is 21 months.

The $99.00 phone, the TF is $375.00 which is what my last two contracts have been for.

I would not touch your friend's phone with a 20 foot pole. You can do far better elsewhere.
