Do you really want the Nexus 5?

I purchased my Nexus 5 not even two months ago, and am already regretting the decision. At first, I had been proud to own my Nexus even after transitioning from my Windows Nokia. Although; in my few weeks with my Nexus 5, I've come to notice quite a few bugs. To say the least. A number of times, my phone has without a reason shut itself down and wouldn't turn back on no matter what I tried until over 30 minutes later when I just left it alone. Things freeze/glitch too often. And the phone itself just isn't anything exiting. Currently, my Nexus is refusing to turn on after shutting itself down (once again....). If you have another (reasonable) option or substitute when deciding to purchase the Nexus 5, pick that one.

First, there are a lot of us here who have not had that experience and enjoy our Nexus 5s. However, your situation is frustrating. If the Nexus 5 is only 2 months old, I would contact Google (if you got it from the Play Store) and tell them your problems and make a request for warranty repair or replacement (they will probably do that latter).

Another thing you can try first (and Google is likely to ask you to do this anyway): Back up all your data on internal storage and do a factory reset. Sometimes that will straighten out an errant phone, especially if it updated from KitKat to Lollipop over the air.

I bought my Nexus 5 when it first came out 14 months ago and I couldn't be happier.

Brianna, welcome to Android Forums. :)

Sorry it had to be for such unfortunate circumstances. :(

The only reason I could think of a phone shutting down and not restarting until is sat for a while would be excessive heat. Most modern electronics have some sort of thermal protection built in so you don't fry components if something goes wrong. You could have process that continues to get hung up. It could be a bad battery or even a faulty thermal protection circuit. As suggested, I'd try a factory reset, but if that doesn't fix it, then definitely contact Google and get it fixed or replaced under warranty. That is NOT normal behavior for this phone.

I have been having some minor problems with the phone re-starting and mentioned this on another thread. Although I can live with it, I might like to try the suggestions of doing a factory reset but I'm not sure how to back up all my data 'on internal storage'.

How would I do this and, more to the point, what is 'internal storage'? Won't anything stored on the phone be lost with a factory reset?

(I am still using 4.4.4, btw.)

First let's define "all my data". If you mean pictures and files, that's easy. Plug your phone into a PC and copy all those folders to a backup folder on your PC. If you mean apps and settings, you can have Google do that by checking the backup apps and settings, which really doesn't save a copy, just a list of the apps so it can reinstall them after a reboot. Settings are iffy ... some will get saved, some won't. If you mean SMS messages and email, you'll need to use an app to back them up because those are stored in a protected database in the system area. Helium Backup does a good job for non-rooted phones. Or titanium backup for rooted devices.

A factory reset will wipe user data from the system partition, but should leave user files on the internal storage partition intact. That said, backup internal storage anyway. Things happen.

Thanks, Lunatic. I was somehow under the impression that 'internal storage' must mean some sort of partition within the phone itself which, I see, is what you refer to at the end of your information. However, backing up to a computer (via USB presumably) sounds easy enough and I think I already have it set for Google to back up certain things. When the time comes, I'll download Helium.
Thanks again for your help and advice.

Well, if you hate the phone that much, i guess that you'll sell it to me at a discounted price. Let me know in pm. Thanks for the phone.:p
