So I've had my MetroPCS Samsung Galaxy Avant for a few days now...

This is an upgrade from the LG L9, which I've had for almost 2 years. The L9 served me well. Fortunately it had a thriving forum section and there was an easy one click root for it so I was able to app to SD (the L9's internal space is terribly small) I am moderately keen on how to get the most out of device resources by cutting out the b.s. so I could have easily dealt without the upgrade to a newer phone. However, after talking with my lady friend (she works at MetroPCS) I just had to jump on the special holiday deal they had where the Avant was only 99 dollars after instant rebates.

Holy Mary! Am I thankful I bought this! Definitely the fastest phone I've ever owned. (It's funny, all my smart phones to date have been 100 dollar jobbers, nothing great compared to the hot items out at the time, but still impressive to me...anyway each 100 dollar phone I've bought over the years seems to get exponentially better)

Anyway I'll start with the cons of the Avant. The back speaker volume does sound like it lacks volume when jacked to the max. (Haven't checked yet if there's a working volume maximizer for it)

I have seen comments about the dimness of the screen... that may be true, but for me I can't tell. I usually keep screens on the dim side anyway because I'm weird about battery power.

I've seen comments about the battery life not being all that great. This might be true too. It does seem to drain faster than my L9, although it could be that the battery life indicator on this version of Android (KitKat) also puts a numbered percentage next to the icon so as I check I'm seeing the numbers decreasing more often than the battery icon changing to show the amount of power left. So I'm not sure. Regardless, I'd easily drain it within the day of heavy usage.

The pros are it's fast! Fast in processing and also fast in mobile data. It's my first LTE phone and I was blown away when I speed tested at 51 Mbits dl and 22 Mbits ul

Granted not all the areas I'll be in will be that fast, but I'm sure it'll always be fast enough.

KitKat (although somewhat masked by Samsung) is very impressive. I'm coming up from jellybean, so this is definitely a pro for me.

The sound quality (music through headphone jack) is fine. Nice and clear.

Call quality is nice and clear.

1.5 Gigs of ram have kept things nice and stable so far. No apps shutting down sudden because of the memory running out...used to have this issue all the time on my older phones especially if I use chrome

16gb internal space. Perfect! Even with the 11gb after Samsung and Metro bloat, I still have plenty of space. I'll still eventually put an external mini SD card in, but I have plenty of time.

Here are some of the changes I've made to my phone so far...

Disabled mostly all of the bloat (except flipboard) also disabled the certain Google Apps I don't use (plus, movies, books etc.)

Disabled Chrome too (uses a lot of battery and it tends to get high on RAM) Installed CM Browser to use as the default browser.

Changed default launcher to Nova Prime, though I may switch to using Smart Launcher Pro again (I'm a launcher junkie.. I found out early on that there's plenty of lite fast and beautiful launchers out there that can make the user experience smoother and prettier) Though with the power of the Avant the default launcher would probably run smooth with no lag.

Installed dock4droid and docked my favorite apps along with the last 5 recent apps. (Makes navigating through android feel more progressive rather than always going back to the home screen or going back to recent apps to switch to the next app.)

Installed greenify to keep a tighter lid on apps that like to run themselves

Installed All in One toolbox for cleaning junk

Installed Fo file browser to manage files

Yeah things are running smoothly. I doubt I'll even feel the need to root this phone.

tl;dr: I'm loving my Samsung Galaxy Avant

Thanks for posting this.
Debating the Avant as a possible replacement for my F3 which I've had for about a year and a half. Currently Best Buy has it on sale for $99 straight with no rebates. Cheap enough that I wouldn't feel too bad if I ended up with something else before too long.
The F3 has been a great phone and still is, battery life is best of anything around and the display is decent (low res but it's IPS). It's big downside has been the limited storage, like the L9, which I've also managed with Link2SD but I'd like to not need to think about it any more.
So it looks like the Avant would be a step up in CPU (dual to quad core, although not faster), internal storage, screen size, Band 12 capability (for the future) and newer Android, with a possible downgrade in battery life and maybe display. Also no Gorilla Glass on the Avant but I'd end up slapping a Zagg on it anyway.

I've had my avant for about 3 months now and I really like it. Its probably the best phone I've had yet. The only things I don't like are that the CPU gets kinda hot sometimes and the battery drains a lot quicker than my f6 did. This might be because I didn't fully charge my battery before I started using it ( in my experience charging the phone for a full 12 hours before ever turning it on makes a significant difference in how long the battery lasts).

The F3 was one of the phones I looked at when I picked up my L9. iirc the F3 was very similar to the L9, I think I went for the l9 because the F3 didn't have flash on the phone or some small reason..I forget. I do remember seeing the two compared to each a lot in comments around the Web and both seemed like a good deal.
When I bought the Avant the newer F60 was a close second. The screen was a small step down from the qHD of the L9 and Avant.. although the F60 does have gorilla glass and I read on a YouTube comment somewhere that the F60 may only be 480x800 but the screen seems more brilliant and vivid than the avant's. The F60 was 50 dollars cheaper than the Avant (both on sale at the time) but at the end of the day I took my chance with the Avant... the internal space was a huge factor.
I do miss the lg apps in the pull down status (floating+transparent calculator and memo, even the stock browser had transparency and the ability to float)
The nice thing you can do on the Samsung is select which entertainment apps appear in the pull down menu when you plug in headphones...but still LG had a nicer pull down imo.

You referring to Flash or camera flash on the F3? It definitely has the latter.
I don't really care about the pulldown apps, as I don't use the phone for media aside from streaming online music in the car.
Have the Avant for a couple of weeks now, compared to the F3 the display is a bit lacking in the color department but at least it's larger and slightly higher res. Sure it would be nice if it were IPS or AMOLED (although maybe the AMOLED wouldn't be as bright in daylight?) but then the phone wouldn't be $99 and it does have the other advantages mentioned.
Every phone will have its pluses and minuses. IMO, so far so good on this one. If I decide to move on to something else before too long I'll only be out the $99 and will have yet another spare device sitting around to use for whatever.

Yeah I meant camera flash my bad...but I'm obviously mistaken as it has it. On a side note, the other day I found out that Dolphin browser supports flash and there's a link that takes you you to the Adobe site that gives you a certain version of flash that'll work within Dolphin (just in case anyone is curious if there's a way to view sites with flash content) Also Dolphin has the text wrapping thing when you pinch zoom. Not long after I posted my original post, I noticed that text was not wrapping to the size of the screen when I pinched in. Read somewhere that around when kitkat came out Google changed their Web rendering engine from webkit to blink and for some reason blink doesn't do text wrap.. but opera and dolphin do so I use dolphin now for a secondary (for sites that I need to concentrate on reading and for sites where I'm curious what the flash content is... although I could do without flash as I never tried going for the workaround with the LG)

I notice that the brightness of the screen lacks more than my LG when I'm outside during the day. Even jacked up to the max. Inside it's fine, and I keep it around 33 percent.

But yeah for 99 dollars no regrets. This will hopefully last as long as my L9, L9 is still fine and working to date too.. but if not no biggie.
I looked up that Zagg screen you mentioned, looks nice. Haven't tried a glass screen protector yet but the comments I'm reading encourage me to want to try it out.

Hm I don't use the browser that much so I haven't noticed the wrap thing. I have Firefox, don't know if it works there or not.
I've been using the Zagg protectors for a long time on all my phones going back to my Optimus M. The application process is a little tricky but I find they hold up extremely well, I've never had to replace one. They get rid of the greasy fingerprints, all I get is a little dust on the screen that wipes off easily. Unfortunately there isn't currently a custom-cut one for the Avant so I had to use a universal one and cut it to fit.
