For me, I've been craving for android since before android existed. I started out with a few LG flip phones and eventually the LG Env. It was well above its time, but you still couldn't customize it the way I really wanted to. Then the Droid 1 hit the shelves and I was hooked. I modded that thing backwards and forwards, but never really got into coding or building from source.
Then I upgraded to the Spectrum. It's a great phone, but had no support at launch and the marketing of it sucked. I waiting around for devs to show up and when none did, I decided to start digging and learning about the insides of android. It definitely helped that I had a small backround in linux. We got root thanks to Dan R and then devs came on board. PlayfulGod, Death2All, TDM, and many more that came and went. I tried to pick up tips and tricks from each of them and have gotten better at my craft.
Now I'm trying to work on the OUYA. It's slow going, just like the Spectrum was and dev support is very limited due to how easy it is to brick the thing. I still tinker with the Spectrum, but with it being my daily driver, it's hard to tinker too much. I'm looking forward to the Moto X Dev Edition as my next phone and then hopefully I can start full work on the Spectrum again. My kernel never did take off as I just didn't have the time to flash back and forth. Maybe that will change this fall.
