Help My wifi and Google Play just freaked out

Verizon has 'sdm.apk' to take the place of the standard, user-controlled 'software updates' option. you can't stop an OTA (you can delay it but it will eventually force it to install) without root access.
I have never rooted a phone before, but this shitty thing they call 5.0 is going to make me do it. I refuse to use 5.0 in its' current version on Verizon.

Not all issues will affect all models or firmware releases and your answers to the following questions will help in the forum's answers to your specific query.

#1 Could you post your Model number and Android version...

To locate these, go to...

Settings > More > About device > Model number and Android version

This will give you the model of Samsung Galaxy S5 that you have and which Android version you are on.


#2. Your current Firmware, (not just Baseband), version .

To locate your current firmware version, go to the stock, Samsung, dial pad and type in...

*#1234#

This will give you your, "Version", details in full, usually 3 lines of information, AP: CP: CSC:, which may all be relevant.

*** If code *#1234# has been disabled on your firmware, you can download and install, free from the Play Store, Phone Info and it will give you, under Firmware Info... PDA, Baseband, CSC, versions.


#3. Also helpful would be your carrier, (service provider), location, (UK, India, Russia, USA, etc: ), and if your phone is rooted or not and running a custom ROM, (give details).

I am experiencing the same problem with my wifi jitters between on and off states (tho not the upload problem) and this started recently during the last 4-5 days. The only Apps I have installed during the last week have been; Kindle for Android, PushBullet and an attempt at installing SureTap Wallet which did not install because of incompatibility with the SIM card version.

I have a Samsung S5 which is on the Rogers Wireless Network in Canada and the details are listed here:

Thanks nickdalzell for clearing that one up. So, in a nutshell, Verizon push, (force), the update to the phone whilst on the standard stock, worldwide, Samsung firmware updates, they are just polled, (notified), and can be dismissed or disabled by the user.

As you have had no issues prior to installing those apps, it would seem likely that one of them may be the culprit. Try the following...

1. Go into Wi-Fi settings and delete your Wi-Fi connection and the re-set it back up again, to see if that solves your problem.

2. Wipe your cache partition in case there is any rubbish left over from your partial install.

I am afraid that as per #2.3 of S5 Lollipop Update Problems - Dummies Guide, (this applies to KitKat as well), you will lose your Wi-Fi settings, etc; if you do an FDR.

By the way, I guess that Android 4.2.2 is a typo! ;)

I am so far free of 5.0, what I did was to turn off config.update and Samsung.updater

that does not catch the Verizon 'sdm.apk' pkg, but I also have update via WiFi only configured.

My game plan for now until Verizon fixes 5.0 and makes it a viable OS is to just leave WiFi disabled for the duration.

To date, this has worked well for me, I am still at 4.4.4 and have never seen a message to update to 5.0

I am considering very strong to just root the phone and leave it on 4.4.4 permanently.

The Galaxy S5 was never issued with Android 4.2.2! The firmware for Rogers that you are on is 4.4.2...

Assume you are dealing with a 5 year old, albeit a savvy one :) and have no idea how to do that.
No problem.
Go to settings.
Find the Wi-Fi icon.
Tap on the Wi-Fi icon.
At the top of the window that opens up you will see a checkbox.
Make sure it is unchecked.
Restart your phone.
Grab a beer and keep your fingers crossed.


Thank you all but despite all these great instructions, nothing seemed to have helped so I will go to Best Buy (where it was purchased) to see if they can help.

On another note,I must be getting dyslexic as the version was indeed 4.4.2.

My new S5 on Android V4 was fine on wifi. Now, on V5.0, wifi is continually dropping out and the phone is a lot hotter. I've now turned the smart network switch off and wifi doesn't seem to be dropping out. But the phone is still continually scanning. Is this normal ? - given that I'm working reasonably close to the wireless hub does it need continually scan ? - is the scanning using battery ?

The scanning itself is fairly easy on battery use. it is just a receiver and it is looking around all the time, even when connected to the only WiFi available.

it just logs other WiFi channels immediately available. Whether it notifies you of such depends on how you configure the WiFi notifications. For me, the only notification I want is "connected". I could care less that 3 of my neighbors just turned on their WiFi routers.

It's not a bug, it's a feature. Google just succeeded in making auto network switch (previously a Samsung feature that introduced itself in 4.3 and disables wifi and switches to mobile data in the event the wifi has a poor connection ) worse and that cannot be disabled. This means we might not realize we switched to data until we get overage texts...

I cannot count on one hand how many times I had to reboot my Nexus 10 because of the 'wifi with exclamation point' and since the N10 has no data capability the only solution was a restart. Simply turning wifi off and then back on did nothing. Not sure where they get the algorithm from, but every instance it has happened there was nothing wrong with my Internet.

Samsung removed it from their devices did they? Because "Avoid poor connections" should still be there otherwise.

4.4.2 Kitkat, Oppo "ColorOS".

Should be able to determine how you're connected, WiFi or cellular, because the notification bar tells you. In this case, I know it's on WiFi data. If it's using cellular data, a "4G" icon appears instead. In fact the streaming apps that I use, that are likely to use a lot of data, do conspicuously warn if they're using cellular data and not WiFi, as it "may incur additional charges". Because if watching a video full-screen, the notification bar may not be visible.


BTW there's few people howling the some WiFi can be too promiscuous, and is auto-connecting to any open WiFi that it finds, some Sprint customers apparently.

Samsung probably removed it to make room for Google's similar feature, Smart Network Switch, which cannot be user disabled.

The stock Samsung, unbranded, Lollipop has a Smart Network Switch option to enable/disable...



Wi-Fi Settings, Advanced on stock Samsung, unbranded, Lollipop firmware, (OA3)...
