Help Phone icon keeps disappearing

The white g in the blue square is Google App. There is something else called Google Search with an icon resembling a search box. I'm uneasy about disabling either of these. I'd like to get rid of the creepy notifications like "you need to leave for the restaurant reservation you made on OpenTable in 10 minutes" or "there is an accident on the stretch of road you were just driving on 15 minutes ago."

But otherwise this seems like a lot of trouble to go to in order to eliminate a pesky little annoyance. I'd much rather have a way to report bugs like this to Google and have them fix it. I know, I know, stop dreaming...

Just turn off notifications in the google app. Open google, tap menu, then settings. There is a setting to turn off audible notifications.

Sorry, what does "install another launcher" mean?
As I said, I wouldn't mind getting rid of Google Now, though I can't see a way to do it. It's not an app I can uninstall.

A launcher is an application which control your home screens.
Go to play store and type launcher in search. You will get many choices. Install one by one. The one you like retain that and uninstall the others.
Apex and Nova are good launchers.
